As a teacher, I've stood
in front of 120 students,
in front of 120 students,
11
36154
3683
Essendo un'insegnante,
sto di fronte a 120 studenti,
sto di fronte a 120 studenti,
00:51
so this stage does not intimidate me.
12

My students come from war-torn countries.
13

I miei studenti provengono
da paesi devastati dalla guerra.

01:00
They're so different from each other,
14
48101
2537
Sono così diversi tra di loro,
01:02
but they have one thing in common:
15
50662

ma hanno in comune una cosa:
01:05
they fled their homes
in order to stay alive.
in order to stay alive.
16

sono fuggiti dalle loro case
per poter sopravvivere.

But when they enter my class,
they make friends,

21

Ma quando entrano in classe,
diventano amici,
diventano amici,
tornano insieme a casa,
01:28
they walk home together,
22
76882
1637
01:31
they do their homework together.
23

My story is like that
of so many other refugees.

25

4133
La mia storia assomiglia
a quella di tanti altri rifugiati.

01:43
The war came when I was still a baby.
26
91063
2074
La guerra iniziò quando
ero ancora piccola.
ero ancora piccola.
01:46
And my father,
27
94131
1217
Mio padre,
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
che è stato assente per gran parte
della mia prima infanzia,
della mia prima infanzia,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
faceva quello che facevano
gli altri uomini:
gli altri uomini:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
combattere per il paese.
01:55
He had two wives and many children.
31
103283
3120
Aveva due mogli e molti figli.
02:00
My mother was his second wife,
32
108459
2329
Mia madre era la sua seconda moglie,
sposata quando aveva 16 anni.
02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812
2279
02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
Solo perché mia madre proveniva
da una famiglia povera
da una famiglia povera
02:10
and she had no choice.
35
118279
1800
e non aveva scelta.
02:12
My father, on the other hand, was rich.
36
120103
2942
Mio padre, d'altra parte, era ricco.
02:15
He had many cows.
37
123069
1333
Aveva molte mucche.
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
Gli spari erano all'ordine del giorno.
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
La mia comunità era sempre sotto attacco.
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
Le comunità si combattevano
mentre prendevano l'acqua dal Nilo.
mentre prendevano l'acqua dal Nilo.
Ma non era tutto.
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
Gli aerei facevano cadere
le terrificanti bombe rotanti
le terrificanti bombe rotanti
che amputavano gli arti delle persone.
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
Ma la cosa più terribile per ogni genitore
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735
6214
era vedere i propri figli rapiti
e trasformati in giovani soldati.
e trasformati in giovani soldati.
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
Mia madre scavò una trincea
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
che divenne presto la nostra casa.
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
Ma comunque non ci sentivamo al sicuro.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
Dovette fuggire alla ricerca
di un posto sicuro per noi.
di un posto sicuro per noi.
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
Avevo quattro anni
e mia sorella più piccola due.
e mia sorella più piccola due.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
Ci unimmo a una grande massa di persone
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
e insieme camminammo
per tanti giorni dolorosi
per tanti giorni dolorosi
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
alla ricerca di un posto sicuro.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
Ma riuscivamo a malapena a riposare
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
prima di venire nuovamente attaccati.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Ricordo che mia madre era incinta
e a turno trasportava me e mia sorella.
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
Finalmente riuscimmo a superare
il confine con il Kenya.
il confine con il Kenya.
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
È stato il viaggio più lungo
che abbia mai fatto in tutta la vita.
che abbia mai fatto in tutta la vita.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Avevo i piedi pieni di vesciche.
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
Con nostra sorpresa,
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
trovammo dei nostri familiari che
erano arrivati al campo tempo prima,
erano arrivati al campo tempo prima,
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
dove tutti voi siete oggi,
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
il campo di Kakuma.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Vorrei che per un momento
rimaneste tutti in silenzio.
rimaneste tutti in silenzio.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Lo sentite?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
Il suono del silenzio.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Nessuno sparo.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Pace, finalmente.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
Questo è stato il mio primo
ricordo di questo campo.
ricordo di questo campo.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Quando venite da una zona di guerra
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
e raggiungete un luogo sicuro come Kakuma,
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
siete andati davvero lontano.
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Sono stata nel campo solo tre anni.
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
Mio padre, assente
per quasi tutta la mia infanzia,
per quasi tutta la mia infanzia,
rientrò nella mia vita.
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
Organizzò il mio trasferimento con mio zio
presso la nostra famiglia a Nakuru.
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Lì c'erano la prima moglie di mio padre,
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
le mie sorellastre e i miei fratellastri.
Mi iscrissero a scuola.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Ricordo il mio primo giorno a scuola,
potevo cantare e ridere di nuovo,
potevo cantare e ridere di nuovo,
e il mio primo set di uniformi,
potete scommetterci.
potete scommetterci.
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
È stato fantastico.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Ma poi capii
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
che per mio zio non era opportuno
che andassi a scuola,
che andassi a scuola,
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
solo perché ero una ragazza.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
I miei fratellastri erano la sua priorità.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
Diceva: "Istruire una ragazza
è una perdita di tempo".
è una perdita di tempo".
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
Per quella ragione persi
molti giorni di scuola,
molti giorni di scuola,
perché le rette non venivano pagate.
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
Intervenne mio padre
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
e fece in modo che andassi in collegio.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Ricordo la fiducia che ripose in me
nei successivi due anni.
nei successivi due anni.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Diceva: "L'istruzione è un animale
che devi dominare.
che devi dominare.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
Con l'istruzione, puoi sopravvivere.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
L'istruzione sarà il tuo primo marito".
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
Con queste parole fece
il suo primo, grande investimento.
il suo primo, grande investimento.
Mi sono sentita fortunata!
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
Ma mi mancava qualcosa:
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
mia madre.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
Mia madre era stata lasciata al campo
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
e io non la vedevo
da quando me ne ero andata.
da quando me ne ero andata.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Sei anni senza vederla sono stati lunghi.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Ero sola,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
a scuola,
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
quando ho saputo della sua morte.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
Ho visto molte persone in Sud Sudan
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
perdere la vita.
Ho sentito di vicini
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
che hanno perso i figli, i mariti,
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
i loro bambini.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Ma mai ho pensato
che potesse succedere a me.
che potesse succedere a me.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
Il mese prima, la mia matrigna,
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
che era stata così buona con me
quando arrivai a Nakuru, era morta.
quando arrivai a Nakuru, era morta.
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Poi seppi che dopo aver dato
alla luce quattro femmine,
alla luce quattro femmine,
mia madre aveva infine dato alla luce
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
quello che avrebbe potuto farla
accettare nella comunità:
accettare nella comunità:
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
un maschio,
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
il mio fratellino.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
Ma anche lui
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
si è aggiunto alla lista dei morti.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
La parte più difficile per me
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
è stata che non ho potuto partecipare
alla sepoltura di mia madre.
alla sepoltura di mia madre.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
Non mi è stato permesso.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Dissero che la sua famiglia
non riteneva opportuno
non riteneva opportuno
che le sue figlie,
partecipassero alla sepoltura,
partecipassero alla sepoltura,
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
solo perché eravamo femmine.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Venivano a piangere da me e dicevano:
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
"Ci dispiace, Mary, per la tua perdita.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
Ci dispiace che i tuoi genitori
non abbiano lasciato dei figli".
non abbiano lasciato dei figli".
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
E mi chiedevo:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
Cosa siamo noi?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
Non siamo figli?
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
Nella mentalità della mia comunità
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
solo il figlio maschio contava.
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
Per questo motivo, sapevo
che questa era la mia fine.
che questa era la mia fine.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
Ma ero la figlia più grande.
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
Dovevo prendermi cura delle mie sorelle.
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
Dovevo assicurarmi che andassero a scuola.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
Avevo 13 anni.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Come potevo fare?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
Tornai al campo
per prendermi cura delle mie sorelle.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Non mi sono mai sentita così impotente.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Ma poi, una delle mie zie, zia Okoi,
decise di prendere le mie sorelle con sé.
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
Mio padre mi mandò dei soldi da Juba
perché potessi tornare a scuola.
perché potessi tornare a scuola.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
Il collegio era il paradiso,
ma era anche molto duro.
ma era anche molto duro.
Mi ricordo quando i genitori
venivano a scuola in visita,
venivano a scuola in visita,
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
e mio padre non c'era.
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Ma quando venne
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
mostrò di nuovo la sua fiducia in me.
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
Questa volta disse:
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
"Mary, non puoi sbagliare,
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
perché sei il futuro delle tue sorelle".
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Ma poi, nel 2012,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
la vita si portò via l'unica cosa
a cui ero aggrappata.
a cui ero aggrappata.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
Mio padre morì.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
I miei voti a scuola
cominciarono a scendere,
cominciarono a scendere,
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
e quando mi presentai
agli esami per il diploma nel 2015,
agli esami per il diploma nel 2015,
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
fui sconvolta nel ricevere una C.
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
Continuo a dire ai miei studenti:
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
"Non si tratta di avere A;
si tratta di fare del vostro meglio".
si tratta di fare del vostro meglio".
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
Quello non era il mio meglio.
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Ero determinata.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
Volevo tornare indietro e riprovare.
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
Ma i miei genitori non c'erano più.
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
Nessuno si prendeva cura di me,
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
e nessuno mi pagava la retta.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
Sentivo di non avere speranze.
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
Ma poi una delle mie migliori amiche,
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
una bellissima donna keniana,
Esther Kaecha,
Esther Kaecha,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
mi chiamò in questo periodo devastante
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
e mi fece: "Mary,
tu hai una volontà di ferro.
tu hai una volontà di ferro.
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
E io ho un piano che funzionerà".
Quando vi trovate
in uno di questi momenti,
in uno di questi momenti,
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
accettate qualsiasi cosa, no?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
Il piano era che aveva trovato
dei soldi per il viaggio
dei soldi per il viaggio
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
per andare alla scuola
superiore Anestar Victory Girls.
superiore Anestar Victory Girls.
Mi ricordo benissimo quel giorno.
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Pioveva quando entrammo
nell'ufficio del direttore.
nell'ufficio del direttore.
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Tremavamo come due galline
fradicie di pioggia
fradicie di pioggia
e lo guardammo.
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
Ci chiese: "Che volete?"
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Lo guardammo con una faccia da gatto.
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
"Vogliamo solo tornare a scuola".
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
Crediateci o no, non solo
pagò le nostre rette,
pagò le nostre rette,
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
ma ci diede anche le uniformi
e qualche spicciolo per il cibo.
e qualche spicciolo per il cibo.
Un applauso per lui.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(Applausi)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Quando terminai la mia carriera scolastica
divenni rappresentante d'istituto.
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
E quando mi presentai agli esami
per la seconda volta,
per la seconda volta,
riuscii a prendere un B meno. Applauso.
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
(Applausi)
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
Grazie.
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Perciò voglio ringraziare
Anestar Victory, il signor Gatimu,
Anestar Victory, il signor Gatimu,
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
e tutto il personale dell'Anestar
per avermi dato questa possibilità.
per avermi dato questa possibilità.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
Di tanto in tanto,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
i membri della mia famiglia insistono
che io e mia sorella dovremmo sposarci,
che io e mia sorella dovremmo sposarci,
così che qualcuno si prenda cura di noi.
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
Dicono:
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
"Abbiamo un uomo per te".
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
Odio davvero il fatto che le persone
ci considerino una proprietà e non figli.
ci considerino una proprietà e non figli.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
A volte, scherzando, dicono:
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
"Perderai il tuo valore di mercato,
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
se diventi troppo istruita".
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
Ma la verità è
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
che una donna istruita fa paura
nella mia comunità.
nella mia comunità.
Ma ho detto loro
che non è quello che voglio.
che non è quello che voglio.
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Non voglio avere figli
a 16 anni come mia madre.
a 16 anni come mia madre.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
Non è questa la mia vita.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Anche se io e le mie sorelle soffriamo,
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
non esiste che facciamo quella fine.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Mi rifiuto di ripetere la storia.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
Istruire una ragazza significa
creare società eque e stabili.
creare società eque e stabili.
Istruire i rifugiati è la speranza
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
di ricostruire i loro paesi un giorno.
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
Le ragazze e le donne
devono fare la loro parte
devono fare la loro parte
esattamente come gli uomini.
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
Ci sono uomini nella mia famiglia
che mi incoraggiano a continuare:
che mi incoraggiano a continuare:
i miei fratellastri, e anche
le mie sorellastre.
le mie sorellastre.
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Quando terminai le scuole superiori,
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
trasferii le mie sorelle a Nairobi,
dove vivono con la mia sorellastra.
dove vivono con la mia sorellastra.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
Vivono in 17 in una casa.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
Ma non ci compatite.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
La cosa più importante è che tutte
ricevono un'istruzione adeguata.
ricevono un'istruzione adeguata.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
I vincitori di oggi
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
sono i perdenti di ieri
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
che non si sono mai arresi.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
È questo che siamo,
io e le mie sorelle.
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
Sono così orgogliosa di questo.
Il più grande investimento nella mia vita
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(Applausi)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
è l'istruzione delle mie sorelle.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
L'istruzione dà a tutti una possibilità
equa e giusta di farcela.
equa e giusta di farcela.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Personalmente credo che l'istruzione
non sia solo il programma di studi.
non sia solo il programma di studi.
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
È amicizia.
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
È scoprire i nostri talenti.
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
È scoprire il nostro destino.
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
Ad esempio, non dimenticherò
la gioia che ho provato
la gioia che ho provato
quando feci la mia prima
lezione di canto a scuola,
lezione di canto a scuola,
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
che è ancora una mia passione.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
Ma non l'avrei avuta
da nessun'altra parte.
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Da insegnante, vedo la mia classe
come un laboratorio
come un laboratorio
che non solo genera abilità e conoscenze
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
ma anche comprensione e speranza.
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Prendiamo un albero.
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
A un albero si possono tagliare i rami,
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
ma dategli dell'acqua
e i rami ricresceranno.
e i rami ricresceranno.
Per un bambino di guerra,
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
l'istruzione può trasformare le lacrime
della perdita in passione per la pace.
della perdita in passione per la pace.
Per questo motivo mi rifiuto
di lasciare indietro
di lasciare indietro
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
un solo studente nella mia classe.
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
(Applausi)
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
L'istruzione cura.
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
L'ambiente scolastico
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
ti dà un obiettivo da raggiungere.
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
Mettiamola in questo modo:
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
quando sei impegnato a risolvere
equazioni matematiche
equazioni matematiche
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
e a memorizzare poesie,
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
dimentichi la violenza
che hai visto a casa.
che hai visto a casa.
14:35
And that is the power of education.
263
863931
3485
È questa la potenza dell'istruzione.
14:39
It creates this place for peace.
264
867440
2850
Crea questo luogo per la pace.
14:42
Kakuma is teeming with learners.
265
870856
1969
Kakuma brulica di studenti.
14:44
Over 85,000 students
are enrolled in schools here,
are enrolled in schools here,
266
872849
5177
Più di 85.000 studenti
sono iscritti a scuola qui,
sono iscritti a scuola qui,
14:50
which makes up 40 percent
of the refugee population.
of the refugee population.
267
878050
3547
vale a dire il 40% dei rifugiati.
14:54
It includes children who lost years
of education because of the war back home.
of education because of the war back home.
268
882040
6905
Ci sono bambini che
hanno perso anni di scuola
hanno perso anni di scuola
a causa della guerra a casa loro.
15:01
And I want to ask you a question:
269
889584
1895
Voglio farvi una domanda:
15:04
If education is about
building a generation of hope,
building a generation of hope,
270
892568
4354
se l'istruzione significa costruire
una generazione di speranza,
una generazione di speranza,
15:09
why are there 120 students
packed in my classroom?
packed in my classroom?
271
897754
4644
perché ci sono 120 studenti
stipati nella mia classe?
stipati nella mia classe?
15:16
Why is it that only six percent
of the primary school students
of the primary school students
272
904288
4019
Com'è possibile che solo il 6%
degli studenti delle elementari
degli studenti delle elementari
15:20
are making it to high school,
273
908331
1736
arrivi alle superiori,
15:22
simply because we do not have
enough places for them?
enough places for them?
274
910091
