We do not choose where to be born.

Mi ne biramo gde ćemo se roditi.
00:17
We do not choose who our parents are.
1
5070
3145
Ne biramo roditelje.
00:21
But we do choose how we are going
to live our lives.
to live our lives.

Ali biramo kako ćemo živeti svoj život.
00:26
I did not choose to be born
in South Sudan,
in South Sudan,
3
14810

Ja nisam birala da se rodim
u Južnom Sudanu,
u Južnom Sudanu,
00:29
a country rife with conflict.
4
17551
2136
zemlji punoj konflikata.
00:32
I did not choose my name --
5
20511
2023
Nisam birala svoje ime -
00:35
Nyiriak,
6
23304
1538
Nirijak,
00:36
which means "war."
7

koje znači „rat“.
00:39
I've always rejected it
8
27308
1963
Uvek sam ga odbacivala,
00:41
and all the legacy it was born into.
9
29295
3435
kao i nasleđe vezano za njega.
00:44
I choose to be called Mary.
10
32754
2219
Izabrala sam da se zovem Meri.
00:48
As a teacher, I've stood
in front of 120 students,
in front of 120 students,
11
36154
3683
Kao nastavnica, stajala sam
pred 120 učenika,
pred 120 učenika,
00:51
so this stage does not intimidate me.
12
39861
2999
tako da me ova pozornica ne plaši.
00:55
My students come from war-torn countries.
13
43996
3549
Moji učenici dolaze
iz ratom razorenih zemalja.
iz ratom razorenih zemalja.
01:00
They're so different from each other,
14
48101
2537
Toliko se razlikuju,
01:02
but they have one thing in common:
15
50662
2818
ali imaju zajedničku jednu stvar:
01:05
they fled their homes
in order to stay alive.
in order to stay alive.
16
53504
3865
pobegli su iz svojih domova
kako bi preživeli.
kako bi preživeli.
01:10
Some of them belong to parents
back home in South Sudan
back home in South Sudan
17
58616
3511
Neki od njih su deca roditelja
koji kod kuće u Južnom Sudanu
koji kod kuće u Južnom Sudanu
01:14
who are killing each other
18
62151
1322
ubijaju jedni druge
01:15
because they belong to a different tribe
or they have a different belief.
or they have a different belief.
19
63497
4450
jer pripadaju drugom plemenu
ili imaju različita uverenja.
ili imaju različita uverenja.
01:20
Others come from other African countries
devastated by war.
devastated by war.
20
68922
4287
Ostali dolaze iz drugih afričkih zemalja
koje su razorene ratom.
koje su razorene ratom.
01:25
But when they enter my class,
they make friends,
they make friends,
21
73823
3035
Ali kada uđu u moju učionicu,
oni se sprijatelje,
oni se sprijatelje,
01:28
they walk home together,
22
76882
1637
idu kući zajedno,
01:31
they do their homework together.
23
79149
1901
i rade domaći zadatak zajedno.
01:33
There is no hatred allowed in my class.
24
81711
3028
Mržnja nije dozvoljena u mojoj učionici.
01:38
My story is like that
of so many other refugees.
of so many other refugees.
25
86078
4133
Moja priča je kao i priča
mnogih drugih izbeglica.
mnogih drugih izbeglica.
01:43
The war came when I was still a baby.
26
91063
2074
Rat je nastupio
kada sam još uvek bila beba.
kada sam još uvek bila beba.
01:46
And my father,
27
94131
1217
Moj otac,
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
koji je bio odsutan tokom većine
mog ranog detinjstva,
mog ranog detinjstva,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
radio je isto što i većina muškaraca:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
borio se za zemlju.
01:55
He had two wives and many children.
31
103283
3120
Imao je dve žene i mnogo dece.
02:00
My mother was his second wife,
32
108459
2329
Moja majka je bila njegova druga žena,
02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812
2279
i udali su je za njega
kada je imala 16 godina.
kada je imala 16 godina.
02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
To je prosto zato što je moja majka
skromnog porekla,
skromnog porekla,
02:10
and she had no choice.
35
118279
1800
i nije imala izbora.
02:12
My father, on the other hand, was rich.
36
120103
2942
S druge strane, moj otac je bio bogat.
02:15
He had many cows.
37
123069
1333
Imao je mnogo krava.
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
Pucnji su bili deo dnevnog reda.
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
Moja zajednica je stalno bila pod napadom.
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
Zajednice su se borile jedna protiv druge
dok su uzimale vodu duž Nila.
dok su uzimale vodu duž Nila.
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
Ali to nije bilo sve.
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
Avioni su ispuštali vrteće
i zastrašujuće bombe
i zastrašujuće bombe
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
koje su otkidale ljudima delove tela.
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
Ali najstrašnija stvar za svakog roditelja
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735
6214
je bilo videti kako im otimaju decu
i pretvaraju ih u mlade vojnike.
i pretvaraju ih u mlade vojnike.
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
Moja majka je iskopala rov
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
koji je uskoro postao naš dom.
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
Ipak, nismo se osećali zaštićeno.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
Morala je da pobegne u potrazi
za bezbednim mestom za nas.
za bezbednim mestom za nas.
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
Ja sam imala četiri godine,
a moja mlađa sestra dve.
a moja mlađa sestra dve.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
Pridružili smo se velikom broju ljudi,
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
i zajedno pešačili mnogo mučnih dana
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
u potrazi za bezbednim mestom.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
Jedva bismo uspeli da se odmorimo
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
pre nego što bi nas opet napali.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Sećam se da je moja majka bila trudna,
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
dok je naizmenično nosila
mene i moju mlađu sestru.
mene i moju mlađu sestru.
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
Konačno smo uspeli
da pređemo kenijsku granicu.
da pređemo kenijsku granicu.
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
Ali to je bilo najduže putovanje
u celom mom životu.
u celom mom životu.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Stopala su mi bila izranjavana plikovima.
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
Na naše iznenađenje,
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
našli smo druge članove porodice
koji su ranije pobegli u kamp,
koji su ranije pobegli u kamp,
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
gde se vi nalazite danas,
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
u kamp Kakuma.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Želim da sada svi budete tihi na trenutak.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Da li čujete to?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
Zvuk tišine.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Nema pucnjave.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Mir, konačno.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
To je bilo moje prvo sećanje na ovaj kamp.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Kada odete iz ratne zone
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
i dođete u bezbedno mesto
kao što je Kakuma,
kao što je Kakuma,
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
stvarno ste otišli daleko.
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Ipak, u kampu sam ostala samo tri godine.
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
Moj otac, koji je bio odsutan
tokom većine mog ranog detinjstva,
tokom većine mog ranog detinjstva,
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
vratio se u moj život.
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
Organizovao je da se preselim sa stricem
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
kod naše porodice u Nakuru.
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Tamo su bili prva žena mog oca,
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
moje polusestre i polubraća.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
Upisala sam se u školu.
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Sećam se svog prvog dana u školi -
mogla sam opet da pevam i smejem se -
mogla sam opet da pevam i smejem se -
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
a imala sam i prvu
školsku uniformu, nego šta.
školsku uniformu, nego šta.
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
Bilo je sjajno.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Ali onda sam shvatila
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
da je moj stric smatrao
da ne treba da idem u školu,
da ne treba da idem u školu,
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
samo zato što sam devojčica.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
Moja polubraća su bila njegov prioritet.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
Govorio bi: „Obrazovati devojčicu
je gubljenje vremena.“
je gubljenje vremena.“
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
I zbog toga sam propustila
mnogo dana u školi,
mnogo dana u školi,
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
jer školarine nisu plaćene.
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
Moj otac je uskočio
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
i organizovao da krenem u internat.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Sećam se koliko je imao vere u mene
u narednih nekoliko godina.
u narednih nekoliko godina.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Govorio bi: „Obrazovanje je životinja
koju moraš da savladaš.
koju moraš da savladaš.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
Uz obrazovanje možeš da preživiš.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
Obrazovanje će biti tvoj prvi suprug.“
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
I sa ovim rečima došlo je
i njegovo prvo veliko ulaganje.
i njegovo prvo veliko ulaganje.
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
Osećala sam se srećno!
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
Ali nešto mi je nedostajalo:
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
moja majka.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
Moja majka je ostala u kampu,
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
i nisam je videla otkako sam otišla.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Šest godina bez nje je stvarno dug period.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Bila sam sama,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
u školi,
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
kada sam čula za njenu smrt.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
Videla sam kako mnogi ljudi
u Južnom Sudanu
u Južnom Sudanu
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
umiru.
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
Od komšija sam čula
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
da su izgubili sinove, muževe,
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
decu.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Ali nikada nisam mislila
da će se to meni desiti.
da će se to meni desiti.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
Mesec dana pre toga, moja pomajka,
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
koja je bila tako dobra prema meni
u Nakuruu, je umrla.
u Nakuruu, je umrla.
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Onda sam shvatila da je,
nakon rađanja četiri devojčice,
nakon rađanja četiri devojčice,
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
moja majka konačno rodila nekog
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
ko ju je mogao učiniti
prihvaćenom u zajednici -
prihvaćenom u zajednici -
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
malog dečaka,
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
mog brata.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
Ali i on se
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
našao na spisku mrtvih.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
Ono što me je najviše zabolelo
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
je činjenica da nisam mogla
da prisustvujem majčinoj sahrani.
da prisustvujem majčinoj sahrani.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
Nisu mi dozvolili.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Rekli su da njena porodica
smatra da nije prikladno
smatra da nije prikladno
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
da njena deca, ženska deca,
prisustvuju sahrani,
prisustvuju sahrani,
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
samo zato što su devojčice.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Jadikovali bi i govorili:
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
„Meri, žao nam je zbog tvog gubitka.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
Žao nam je što tvoji roditelji
nikada nisu ostavili decu.“
nikada nisu ostavili decu.“
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
A ja bih se pitala:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
šta smo mi?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
Zar mi nismo deca?
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
U skladu sa mentalitetom moje zajednice,
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
samo su se muška deca računala.
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
I zato sam znala da je to moj kraj.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
Ja sam bila najstarija devojčica.
Morala sam da se brinem
o braći i sestrama.
o braći i sestrama.
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
Da se postaram da idu u školu.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
Imala sam 13 godina.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Da li sam ja to mogla?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
Vratila sam se u kamp
da brinem o braći i sestrama.
da brinem o braći i sestrama.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Nikad se nisam osećala tako zarobljeno.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Zatim je jedna od mojih tetaka,
teta Okoi, rešila da uzme moje sestre.
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
Otac mi je poslao novac iz Džube
da se vratim u školu.
da se vratim u školu.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
Internat je bio raj,
ali je bilo i tako teško.
ali je bilo i tako teško.
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
Sećam se dana posete,
kada bi roditelji došli u školu,
kada bi roditelji došli u školu,
a moj otac nije.
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Ali kada bi došao,
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
imao je istu veru u mene.
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
Jednom prilikom mi je rekao:
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
„Meri, ne smeš da zalutaš,
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
jer si ti budućnost
svoje braće i sestara.“
svoje braće i sestara.“
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Ali, onda mi je 2012. godine,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
život oduzeo jedinu stvar
za koju sam se držala.
za koju sam se držala.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
Moj otac je umro.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
Moje ocene u školi su počele
da se pogoršavaju,
da se pogoršavaju,
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
i kada sam radila završne testove
na kraju srednje škole, 2015. godine,
na kraju srednje škole, 2015. godine,
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
bila sam očajna što sam dobila trojku.
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
Okej, ja i dalje govorim svojim učenicima:
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
„Nije stvar u peticama,
nego da date sve od sebe.“
nego da date sve od sebe.“
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
Ja nisam dala sve od sebe.
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Bila sam odlučna.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
Želela sam da se vratim i pokušam opet.
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
Ali mojih roditelja nije bilo.
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
Niko se nije brinuo o meni,
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
i niko nije mogao da plati školarinu.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
Osećala sam se beznadežno.
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
Ali, onda me je jedna
od najboljih drugarica,
od najboljih drugarica,
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
prelepa dama iz Kenije, Ester Kajeća,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
zvala u ovom očajnom trenutku,
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
i rekla mi: „Meri, ti imaš jaku volju.
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
A ja imam plan, i upaliće.“
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
Okej, kada ste tako očajni,
prihvatate bilo šta, zar ne?
prihvatate bilo šta, zar ne?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
Plan je bio da ona nabavi
nešto novca za put
nešto novca za put
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
da odemo u „Anestar Victory“ -
žensku srednju školu.
žensku srednju školu.
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
Dobro se sećam tog dana.
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Padala je kiša kada smo ušle
u direktorovu kancelariju.
u direktorovu kancelariju.
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Tresle smo se kao dva pokisla pileta,
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
i pogledale ga.
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
Pitao je: „Šta hoćete?“
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Pogledale smo ga umiljato.
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
„Samo želimo da se vratimo u školu.“
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
Verovali ili ne, ne samo
da nam je platio školarine,
da nam je platio školarine,
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
već i uniforme i džeparac za hranu.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
Aplauz za njega.
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(Aplauz)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Kada sam završila srednju školu,
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
postala sam predsednica.
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
Kada sam ponovo polagala završne testove,
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
uspela sam da dobijem 4-. Pljesak.
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
(Aplauz)
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Hvala vam.
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
Stvarno želim da se zahvalim
školi „Anestar Victory“, gospodinu Gatimu
školi „Anestar Victory“, gospodinu Gatimu
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
i celom bratstvu Anestara na toj šansi.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
S vremena na vreme,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
članovi moje porodice insistiraju
da se moja sestra i ja udamo
da se moja sestra i ja udamo
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
kako bi se neko brinuo o nama.
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
Kažu:
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
„Imamo čoveka za tebe.“
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
Stvarno mrzim to što nas ljudi
gledaju kao svojinu, a ne kao decu.
gledaju kao svojinu, a ne kao decu.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
Ponekad kroz šalu kažu:
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
„Izgubićeš tržišnu vrednost
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
što obrazovanija postaješ.“
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
Istina je
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
da se u mojoj zajednici
plaše obrazovane žene.
plaše obrazovane žene.
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
Rekla sam im da to nije ono što želim.
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Ne želim da dobijem decu
sa 16 godina kao moja majka.
sa 16 godina kao moja majka.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
To nije moj život.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Iako moje sestre i ja patimo,
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
nema šanse da izaberemo taj put.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Ne želim da ponovim istoriju.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
Obrazovanje devojčica će stvoriti
ravnopravna i stabilna društva.
ravnopravna i stabilna društva.
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
A obrazovane izbeglice će biti nada
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
za obnovu njihovih zemalja jednog dana.
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
Devojčice i žene imaju istu ulogu u ovome
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
kao i muškarci.
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
Pa, u mojoj porodici ima muškaraca
koji me ohrabruju da nastavim dalje:
koji me ohrabruju da nastavim dalje:
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
moja polubraća, a i moje polusestre.
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Kada sam završila srednju školu,
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
preselila sam sestre u Najrobi,
gde žive sa mojom polusestrom.
gde žive sa mojom polusestrom.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
Njih 17 živi u jednoj kući.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
Ali nemojte nas žaliti.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
Najvažnija stvar je što svi
imaju pristojno obrazovanje.
imaju pristojno obrazovanje.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
Oni koji pobeđuju danas
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
su juče gubili,
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
ali nikada nisu odustali.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
A to smo mi,
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
moje sestre i ja.
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
I tako sam ponosna na to.
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
Moje najveće životno ulaganje -
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(Aplauz)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
je obrazovanje mojih sestara.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
Obrazovanje stvara jednake
i fer šanse za sve.
i fer šanse za sve.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Lično verujem da u obrazovanju
nije poenta u nastavnom planu.
nije poenta u nastavnom planu.
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
Nego u prijateljstvu.
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
U otkrivanju naših talenata.
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
U otkrivanju naše sudbine.
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
Ja, na primer, neću zaboraviti
radost koju sam osetila
radost koju sam osetila
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
kada sam prvi put imala
časove pevanja u školi,
časove pevanja u školi,
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
što je još uvek moja strast.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
Ali to ne bih dobila
nigde drugo.
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Kao nastavnik, vidim učionicu
kao laboratoriju
kao laboratoriju
koja proizvodi ne samo veštine i znanja,
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
već i razumevanje i nadu.
Uzmimo drvo kao primer.
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Možemo mu odseći grane,
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
ali ako mu damo vodu, dobiće nove.
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
Za dete rata,
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
obrazovanje može preobratiti
suze gubitka u strast za mirom.
suze gubitka u strast za mirom.
I zato neću dići ruke ni od jednog
učenika u svom razredu.
učenika u svom razredu.
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
(Aplauz)
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
Obrazovanje leči.
Školska sredina
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
vam daje fokus da nastavite napred.
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
Recimo ovako:
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
kada ste zauzeti rešavanjem
matematičkih jednačina,
matematičkih jednačina,
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
i pamćenjem poezije,
zaboravite nasilje
kojem ste svedočili kod kuće.
kojem ste svedočili kod kuće.
14:31
