00:48
As a teacher, I've stood
in front of 120 students,
in front of 120 students,
11
36154
3683
Ca profesoară,
am stat în fața a 120 de elevi,
am stat în fața a 120 de elevi,
00:51
so this stage does not intimidate me.
12
39861

deci scena aceasta nu mă intimidează.
00:55
My students come from war-torn countries.
13
43996
3549
Elevii mei vin din țări
distruse de războaie.
distruse de războaie.
01:00
They're so different from each other,
14
48101
2537
Ei sunt așa de diferiți unii de alții
01:02
but they have one thing in common:
15
50662
2818
și totuși au ceva în comun:
01:05
they fled their homes
in order to stay alive.
in order to stay alive.
16
53504
3865
și-au părăsit casele
ca să supraviețuiască.

01:10
Some of them belong to parents

Unii au părinți acasă, în Sudan,
care se omoară între ei,
01:14
who are killing each other
18

01:15
because they belong to a different tribe
or they have a different belief.

01:20
Others come from other African countries
devastated by war.

Alții vin din alte țări ale Africii
distruse de război.

01:25
But when they enter my class,
they make friends,
they make friends,
21
73823
3035
Dar când intră în clasa mea
se împrietenesc,
se împrietenesc,
01:28
they walk home together,
22
76882
1637
merg acasă împreună,
01:31
they do their homework together.
23

fac tema împreună.
01:33
There is no hatred allowed in my class.
24
81711

Ura nu e permisă în clasa mea.
01:38
My story is like that
of so many other refugees.
of so many other refugees.
25
86078
4133
Povestea mea e la fel ca povestea
multor alți refugiați.
multor alți refugiați.
01:43
The war came when I was still a baby.
26
91063
2074
Războiul a început
când eram încă un bebeluș.
când eram încă un bebeluș.
01:46
And my father,
27
94131
1217
Și tatăl meu,
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
care a fost mai de grabă absent
în timpul copilăriei mele,
în timpul copilăriei mele,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
a făcut același lucru
ca și ceilalți bărbați:
ca și ceilalți bărbați:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
a luptat pentru țară.
01:55
He had two wives and many children.
31
103283
3120
Avea două soții și mulți copii.
02:00
My mother was his second wife,
32
108459
2329
Mama mea era a doua soție,
02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812
2279
căsătorită cu el de când avea 16 ani.
02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
Asta pentru că provenea
dintr-o familie săracă
dintr-o familie săracă
02:10
and she had no choice.
35
118279
1800
și n-a avut de ales.
02:12
My father, on the other hand, was rich.
36
120103
2942
Tatăl mea, de altă parte, era bogat.
02:15
He had many cows.
37
123069
1333
Avea multe vaci.
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
Focurile de armă erau zilnice.
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
Comunitatea noastră era atacată constant.
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
Comunitățile luptau între ele,
în timp ce luau apă din același Nil.
în timp ce luau apă din același Nil.
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
Dar asta nu era totul.
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
Avioanele lansau bombe îngrozitoare
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
care au amputat picioarele oamenilor.
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
Dar lucrul cel mai îngrozitor
pentru un părinte
pentru un părinte
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735
6214
era să-și vadă copilul răpit
și transformat într-un soldat.
și transformat într-un soldat.
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
Mama a săpat o groapă,
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
care a devenit casa noastră.
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
Dar nu ne-am simțit în siguranță.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
Ea trebuia să fuge,
să caute un loc sigur pentru noi.
să caute un loc sigur pentru noi.
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
Aveam patru ani și sora mea avea doi ani.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
Ne-am alăturat unei mulțimi
imense de oameni
imense de oameni
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
și împreună am mers
timp de multe zile chinuitoare
timp de multe zile chinuitoare
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
ca să găsim un loc sigur.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
Dar abia ne puteam odihni
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
înainte să fim atacați din nou.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Îmi amintesc că mama era însărcinată
când trebuia să ne care pe rând
pe mine și pe sora mea mai mică.
pe mine și pe sora mea mai mică.
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
În final am traversat granița cu Kenya,
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
dar asta a fost cea mai lungă călătorie
pe care am făcut-o în viața mea.
pe care am făcut-o în viața mea.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Picioarele îmi erau pline de bășici.
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
Spre surprinderea noastră,
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
ne-am întâlnit cu alți membri ai familiei
care au fugit în tabără mai devreme,
care au fugit în tabără mai devreme,
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
unde suntem toți astăzi,
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
tabăra Kakuma.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Acum, vă rog să faceți liniște
pentru un moment.
pentru un moment.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Auziți asta?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
Sunetul liniștii.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Niciun foc de armă.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Pace, în sfârșit.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
Asta e prima mea amintire
din această tabără.
din această tabără.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Când te muți dintr-o zonă de război
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
și ajungi într-un loc sigur precum Kakuma,
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
ai ajuns deja departe.
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Am rămas în tabără doar trei ani.
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
Tatăl meu, care a lipsit
aproape toată copilăria mea,
aproape toată copilăria mea,
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
a revenit în viața mea.
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
Și a organizat
să mă mut împreună cu unchiul meu
să mă mut împreună cu unchiul meu
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
la familia noastră din Nakuru.
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Acolo am găsit prima soție a tatălui meu,
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
surorile și frații mei vitregi.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
Am fost înscrisă la școală.
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Îmi amintesc prima mea zi în școală,
am putut să cânt și să râd din nou,
am putut să cânt și să râd din nou,
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
și prima mea uniformă...
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
A fost uimitor.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Dar mai târziu am realizat
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
că unchiul meu nu credea
că școala e pentru mine
că școala e pentru mine
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
doar pentru că sunt fată.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
Frații mei vitregi aveau prioritate.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
El spunea: „Educarea unei fete
este o pierdere de timp.”
este o pierdere de timp.”
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
Din această cauză
am lipsit mult de la școală,
am lipsit mult de la școală,
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
pentru că taxele n-au fost plătite.
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
Tatăl meu a intervenit
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
și a reușit să mă trimită
la o școală cu internat.
la o școală cu internat.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Îmi amintesc încrederea
pe care mi-a acordat-o în anii următori.
pe care mi-a acordat-o în anii următori.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Spunea că educația e un animal
pe care trebuie să-l învingi.
pe care trebuie să-l învingi.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
Cu educație poți supraviețui.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
Educația trebuie să fie primul tău soț.
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
Și cu aceste cuvintele a venit
și prima lui investiție în mine.
și prima lui investiție în mine.
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
M-am simțit norocoasă!
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
Dar mi-a lipsit ceva:
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
mama.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
Mama a fost lăsată în urmă în tabără
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
și n-am mai văzut-o
de când am părăsit tabăra.
de când am părăsit tabăra.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Cei șase ani de când n-am văzut-o
au fost foarte lungi.
au fost foarte lungi.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Eram singură,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
în școală
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
când am auzit că a murit.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
Vedeam mulți oameni înapoi în Sudan
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
pierzându-și viața.
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
Am auzit că vecinii
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
și-au pierdut fiii, soții,
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
copiii.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Dar niciodată nu m-am gândit
că mi se poate întâmpla și mie.
că mi se poate întâmpla și mie.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
O lună mai devreme, mama mea vitregă,
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
care m-a tratat foarte bine în Nakuru,
a murit prima.
a murit prima.
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Apoi am realizat
că după ce a născut patru fete,
că după ce a născut patru fete,
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
mama mea a dat, în sfârșit, naștere
la ceva
la ceva
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
ce ar fi făcut-o
să fie acceptată în comunitate,
să fie acceptată în comunitate,
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
un băiețel,
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
frățiorul meu.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
Dar și el
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
s-a înscris pe lista celor morți.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
Partea cea mai dureroasă pentru mine
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
era faptul că n-am putut participa
la înmormântarea mamei.
la înmormântarea mamei.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
Nu mi s-a permis.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Au spus că familiei ei
nu i s-a părut potrivit
nu i s-a părut potrivit
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
ca noi, copiii ei, care eram toate fete,
să participăm la înmormântare,
să participăm la înmormântare,
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
doar pentru că eram fete.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Mi s-au plâns și ziceau:
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
„Ne pare rău, Mary, pentru pierderea ta.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
Ne pare rău că părinții tăi
n-au lăsat în urmă niciun copil.”
n-au lăsat în urmă niciun copil.”
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
Și m-am întrebat:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
Ce suntem noi?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
Nu suntem copii?
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
În mentalitatea comunității mele
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
numai băiatul contează.
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
Din această cauză,
știam că acesta e sfârșitul meu.
știam că acesta e sfârșitul meu.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
Dar eram fata cea mai mare.
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
Trebuia să am grijă de surorile mele.
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
Trebuia să mă asigur
că ele merg la școală.
că ele merg la școală.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
Aveam 13 ani.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Cum am făcut asta?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
M-am întors în tabără
să am grijă de surorile mele.
să am grijă de surorile mele.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Niciodată nu m-am simțit așa de pierdută.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Și atunci, una dintre mătușele mele,
mătușa Okoi,
mătușa Okoi,
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
decide să-mi ia surorile.
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
Tata mi-a trimis bani
din Juba, să mă întorc la școală.
din Juba, să mă întorc la școală.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
Internatul era paradisul,
dar în același timp atât de greu.
dar în același timp atât de greu.
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
Îmi amintesc zilele de vizită
când părinții veneau la școală
când părinții veneau la școală
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
și tatăl meu lipsea.
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Dar când a venit,
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
mi-a repetat încrederea în mine.
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
De această dată spunea:
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
„Mary, nu te poți rătăci,
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
pentru că tu ești viitorul
surorilor tale.”
surorilor tale.”
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Dar atunci, în 2012,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
viața mi-a luat singurul lucru
de care m-am ținut.
de care m-am ținut.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
Tata a murit.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
Notele mele începeau să se înrăutățească
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
și când am dat bacalaureatul în 2015,
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
m-am simțit distrusă pentru că am obținut
calificativul suficient.
calificativul suficient.
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
Ok, întotdeauna spun elevilor mei:
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
„Nu e despre notele de 10,
ci despre a da tot ce ai mai bun.”
ci despre a da tot ce ai mai bun.”
Asta nu era tot ce aveam eu mai bun.
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Eram hotărâtă.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
Voiam să merg înapoi, să încerc din nou.
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
Dar părinții mei nu mai erau.
N-am avut pe nimeni
care să aibă grijă de mine
care să aibă grijă de mine
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
și pe nimeni care să-mi plătească taxa.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
M-am simțit fără speranță.
Dar atunci,
una dintre prietenele mele cele mai bune,
una dintre prietenele mele cele mai bune,
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
o domnișoară frumoasă din Kenya,
Esther Kaecha,
Esther Kaecha,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
m-a sunat în acest moment devastator
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
și mi-a spus:
„Mary, tu ai o voință puternică.
„Mary, tu ai o voință puternică.
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
Și am un plan, care va funcționa.”
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
Bine, când ești în acele momente
devastatoare accepți orice, nu?
devastatoare accepți orice, nu?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
Planul era următorul,
a făcut rost de bani
a făcut rost de bani
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
ca noi să putem pleca
la Liceul Anester Victory pentru fete.
la Liceul Anester Victory pentru fete.
Îmi amintesc așa de bine ziua aceea.
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Ploua când am intrat
în biroul directorului.
în biroul directorului.
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Tremuram ca două găini plouate
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
și ne-am uitat la el.
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
El a întrebat: „Ce vreți?”
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Și noi ne-am uitat la el cu ochi mari:
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
„Am dori să ne întoarcem la școală.”
Și, credeți sau nu, el ne-a plătit
nu numai taxa de școlarizare
nu numai taxa de școlarizare
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
ci și uniforma și ne-a dat și bani
de buzunar pentru mâncare.
de buzunar pentru mâncare.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
Aplauze pentru el.
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(Aplauze)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Când am terminat liceul,
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
am devenit reprezentantul studenților.
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
Și când am dat bacalaureatul
pentru a doua oară,
pentru a doua oară,
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
am primit calificativul bine. Aplauze.
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
(Aplauze)
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Mulțumesc.
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
Deci aș dori să-i mulțumesc
lui Anester Victory, domnului Gatimu
lui Anester Victory, domnului Gatimu
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
și întregii asociații studențești
din Anester pentru că mi-au dat o șansă.
din Anester pentru că mi-au dat o șansă.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
Din când în când,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
membrii familiei mele insistă
ca eu și sora mea să ne căsătorim
ca eu și sora mea să ne căsătorim
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
ca cineva să aibă grijă de noi.
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
Ei spun:
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
„Am găsit un bărbat pentru tine.”
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
Chiar urăsc faptul că suntem tratați
ca niște obiecte și nu ca niște copii.
ca niște obiecte și nu ca niște copii.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
Uneori ne zic glumind:
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
„O să-ți pierzi valoarea pe piață
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
cu cât devii mai educată.”
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
Dar adevărul este
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
că în comunitatea mea
oamenii se tem de o femeie educată.
oamenii se tem de o femeie educată.
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
Dar le-am spus că eu nu asta vreau.
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Nu vreau să am copii la 16 ani
ca mama mea.
ca mama mea.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
Aceasta nu este viața mea.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Chiar dacă eu și surorile mele suferim
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
n-o să mergem pe același drum.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Refuz să repet istoria.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
Educarea unei fete
creează o societate egală și stabilă.
creează o societate egală și stabilă.
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
Și refugiatele educate vor fi speranța
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
reconstruiri țărilor lor într-o zi.
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
Fetele și femeile au un rol în asta
la fel de mult ca bărbații.
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
Am persoane în familie
care mă încurajează să merg mai departe:
care mă încurajează să merg mai departe:
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
frații și surorile mele vitrege.
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Când am terminat liceul,
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
le-am mutat pe surorile mele în Nairobi
la sora mea vitregă.
la sora mea vitregă.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
Trăiesc 17 persoane într-o casă.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
Dar nu trebuie să ne compătimiți.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
Lucrul cel mai important e că toți
primesc o educație corespunzătoare.
primesc o educație corespunzătoare.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
Câștigătorii de astăzi,
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
sunt pierzătorii de ieri,
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
care niciodată n-au renunțat.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
Și asta suntem noi,
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
surorile mele și eu.
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
Și sunt mândră de asta.
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
Investiția cea mai mare din viața mea
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(Aplauze)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
este educarea surorilor mele.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
Educația creează o șansă egală
și dreaptă pentru toți.
și dreaptă pentru toți.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Eu personal cred că educația
nu este numai despre programă.
nu este numai despre programă.
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
E despre prietenie.
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
E despre descoperirea talentelor noastre.
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
E despre descoperirea destinului nostru.
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
De exemplu, n-o să uit bucuria
pe care am simțit-o
pe care am simțit-o
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
prima dată când aveam ore de muzică
la școală,
la școală,
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
care e încă o pasiune a mea.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
Dar asta n-aș fi primit-o
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
altundeva.
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Fiind profesoară,
îmi văd clasa ca un laborator
îmi văd clasa ca un laborator
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
care creează nu numai aptitudini
și știință,
și știință,
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
ci și înțelegere și speranță.
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Să luăm un copac.
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
Poți să tai crengile copacului,
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
dar dacă îi dai apă
îi vor crește crengi noi.
îi vor crește crengi noi.
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
În cazul unui copil din război
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
educația poate transforma lacrimile
pierderii într-o pasiune pentru pace.
pierderii într-o pasiune pentru pace.
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
Din această cauză,
refuz să renunț la un singur elev.
refuz să renunț la un singur elev.
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
(Aplauze)
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
Educația vindecă.
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
Mediul școlar
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
îți dă un punct pe care să te concentrezi.
Haideți să o luăm în felul următor:
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
când ești ocupat cu rezolvarea ecuațiilor
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
și înveți poezii,
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
uiți violența pe care ai văzut-o acasă.
14:35
And that is the power of education.
263
863931
3485
Și asta este puterea educației.
