ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ann Morgan - Writer, blogger, author
Ann Morgan challenged herself to read a book from every country in the world.

Why you should listen

One day British writer Ann Morgan realized that most books in her bookshelves were by British or American authors. She undertook to read, over the course of a year, at least one book from each of the world's 196 countries -- texts often suggested by bibliophiles from all over the world.

Her experience inspired her book Reading the World (US title: The World Between Two Covers). She blogs about international literature, and her first novel, a psychological literary thriller called Beside Myself, will be published in January 2016.

Ann Morgan: My year reading a book from every country in the world

It's often said that you can tell
a lot about a person

by looking at what's on their bookshelves.

тэр хүн ямар хүн бэ гэдгийг

What do my bookshelves say about me?

Миний номын тавиур юу гэх бол?
00:22
Well, when I asked myself
this question a few years ago,
3
10402
3684
Би энэ асуултыг хэдэн жилийн өмнө
өөрөөсөө асуухад
надад үнэхээр нэгийг бодогдуулсан.
00:26
I made an alarming discovery.

00:29
I'd always thought of myself
as a fairly cultured,

Би уг нь өөрийгөө бас ч үгүй соёлтой,
00:32
cosmopolitan sort of person.

юм үзэж нүд тайлсан хүн гэж боддог байлаа.

But my bookshelves told
a rather different story.

3096
Гэтэл миний номнууд
арай л өөр зүйл хэлэх шиг.
00:38
Pretty much all the titles on them
8
26439
1652
Тэдгээрийн ихэнхийг нь
00:40
were by British or North American authors,
9
28115
2859
Англи эсвэл Хойд Америкийн
зохиолчид бичсэн,
00:42
and there was almost
nothing in translation.
10

орчуулгын ном бараг огт үгүй байсан.

Discovering this massive,
cultural blind spot in my reading
11
34327
3850
Өөрийн унших зуршилд байсан
энэ том соёлын ангалыг олж хараад
00:50
came as quite a shock.
12
38201
1801
би их цочирдсон.
00:52
And when I thought about it,
it seemed like a real shame.
13
40026
3493
Бодох тусам дэндүү харамсалтай
санагдаж байлаа.
00:55
I knew there had to be lots
of amazing stories out there
14
43543
3372
Англи хэлээс бусад
хэл дээр бичдэг зохиолчдын
00:58
by writers working in languages

15
46939
3377
маш олон гайхалтай бүтээл
байж л таараа шүү дээ.
01:02
And it seemed really sad to think
that my reading habits meant
16
50340
3302
Тэгээд миний уншлагын зуршлаас болоод
тэдгээрийг би хэзээ ч уншихгүй гэдэг
үнэхээр харамсалтай санагдсан.
01:05
I would probably never encounter them.
17
53666
2357
01:08
So, I decided to prescribe myself
18
56435
2866
Ингээд би өөрийгөө дэлхийн
олон орны зохиол унших
01:11
an intensive course of global reading.
19
59325
2618
эрчимжүүлсэн сургалтанд
хамруулахаар боллоо.
01:14
2012 was set to be a very
international year for the UK;
20
62602
3738
2012 он Англи орны хувьд их л олон улсын
шинж чанартай жил болохоор байлаа.
01:18
it was the year of the London Olympics.
21
66364
2072
Тэр жил Лондогийн Олимп болсон.
01:20
And so I decided to use it
as my time frame
22
68460
3522
Би энэ хугацааг дэлхийн орон бүрийн
зохиол, түүвэр өгүүллэг,
01:24
to try to read a novel,
short story collection
23
72006
3207
намтар, тууж уншихад
зориулахаар шийдлээ.
01:27
or memoir from every country in the world.
24
75237
4317
Би энэ зорилгодоо
хүрч чадсан.
01:32
And so I did.
25
80771
1333
01:34
And it was very exciting
26
82128
1627
Энэ маш гайхалтай
дурсамж байсан ба
01:35
and I learned some remarkable things
27
83779
1896
би их зүйл сурч мэдсэн,
01:37
and made some wonderful connections
28
85699
2115
бас олон сайхан харилцааг үүсгэсэн.
Өнөөдөр би эдгээрийг та нартай
хуваалцмаар байна.
01:39
that I want to share with you today.
29
87838
1869
01:42
But it started with some
practical problems.
30
90088
3198
Гэхдээ анх маш энгийн асуудлуудтай
тулгарсан л даа.
01:45
After I'd worked out which of the many
different lists of countries in the world
31
93849
4667
Дэлхийн орон бүрийг жагсаасан
олон өөр жагсаалтын учрыг нь олоод,
01:50
to use for my project,
32
98540
2206
01:52
I ended up going with the list
of UN-recognized nations,
33
100770
3150
тэдгээрээс НҮБ-ын жагсаалтыг
өөртөө ашиглахаар сонгон
дээр нь Тайвань улсыг нэмээд,
01:55
to which I added Taiwan,
34
103944
1223
01:57
which gave me a total of 196 countries.
35
105191
3356
нийт 196 оронтой болов оо.
02:01
And after I'd worked out
how to fit reading and blogging
36
109143
2855
7 хоногт 5 өдөр ажиллангаа
номоо унших, түүнийхээ тухай
бичих хуваариа
02:04
about, roughly, four books a week
37
112022
2310
7 хоногт 4 ном гэж тооцоолоод
02:06
around working five days a week,
38
114356
3111
хамгийн сүүлд нь бүх орноос
02:09
I then had to face up to the fact
that I might even not be able
39
117491
3704
англи хэл дээр бичигдсэн номыг
олж чадахгүй байх гэдгээ ойлгосон.
02:13
to get books in English
from every country.
40
121219
2728
02:16
Only around 4.5 percent
of the literary works published
41
124546
3745
Англи улсад жил бүр
хэвлэгддэг ном зохиолын
02:20
each year in the UK are translations,
42
128315
2651
зөвхөн 4.5 орчим хувь нь
орчуулгынх байдаг.
02:22
and the figures are similar for much
of the English-speaking world.
43
130990
3626
Энэ тоо англи хэлээр ярьдаг
ихэнх орны хувьд бараг л ижил.
02:26
Although, the proportion
of translated books published
44
134640
2953
Гэтэл бусад оронд
02:29
in many other countries is a lot higher.
45
137617
2792
орчуулгын номны хэвлэл давамгайлдаг.
02:33
4.5 percent is tiny enough to start with,
46
141101
3308
4.5 хувь гэдэг өөрөө маш бага үзүүлэлт ч
02:36
but what that figure doesn't tell you
47
144433
1835
үүний цаана эдгээр орчуулгын номнууд нь
02:38
is that many of those books
will come from countries
48
146292
2673
хэвлэлийн бизнес хөгжсөн,
02:40
with strong publishing networks
49
148989
2174
тэдгээр номыг англи ном хэвлэлийн газарт
зарахаар бэлтгэгдсэн
02:43
and lots of industry professionals
primed to go out and sell those titles
50
151187
4167
олон мэргэжилтэнтэй улс орных байдаг
гэдгийг санах хэрэгтэй.
02:47
to English-language publishers.
51
155378
1960
02:49
So, for example, although well over 100
books are translated from French
52
157711
4572
Жишээлбэл, Англи улсад
франц хэлнээс орчуулсан ном
02:54
and published in the UK each year,
53
162307
1903
жилдээ 100 гаруй хэвлэгддэг бол
02:56
most of them will come from countries
like France or Switzerland.
54
164234
4413
тэдгээрийн ихэнх нь Франц эсвэл
Швецарь гэх мэт улсаас гаралтай байдаг.
03:01
French-speaking Africa, on the other hand,
55
169107
2738
Харин францаар ярьдаг
Африкийн орнуудын хувьд
бараг л хэзээ ч үзэгдэж харагддаггүй.
03:03
will rarely ever get a look-in.
56
171869
1642
03:06
The upshot is that there are
actually quite a lot of nations
57
174284
3323
Ийм ч учраас англи хэл дээрх ном зохиол
03:09
that may have little or even no
commercially available literature
58
177631
3631
маш бага эсвэл огт байхгүй
улс орнууд зөндөө байдаг.
03:13
in English.
59
181286
1153
03:15
Their books remain invisible to readers
60
183074
3066
Дэлхий дээр хэвлэлд хамгийн их
ашиглагддаг хэл дээрх
03:18
of the world's most published language.
61
186164
2838
ном уншдаг хүмүүст
тэдний бүтээл үл үзэгдсэн хэвээр байдаг.
Гэхдээ орон бүрээс ном
уншихыг оролдоход
03:22
But when it came to reading the world,
62
190002
1818
03:23
the biggest challenge of all for me
63
191844
1770
надад тулгарсан хамгийн том
бэрхшээл бол
03:25
was that fact that I didn't
know where to start.
64
193638
3134
би хаанаас нь эхлэхээ мэдэхгүй байлаа.
03:29
Having spent my life reading
almost exclusively British
65
197201
3358
Амьдралдаа дандаа англи
эсвэл хойд америкийн ном уншиж
өнгөрүүлсний хувьд
03:32
and North American books,
66
200583
1649
03:34
I had no idea how to go about
sourcing and finding stories
67
202256
3589
бусад орноос яаж ном хайж олох тухай
03:37
and choosing them from much
of the rest of the world.
68
205869
2711
би юу ч мэддэггүй байсан.
03:40
I couldn't tell you how to source
a story from Swaziland.
69
208604
3385
Би Свазиландаас гаралтай түүхийг
хаанаас яаж олохыг мэдэхгүй.
03:44
I wouldn't know a good novel from Namibia.
70
212013
2635
Би Намибын ганц ч сайн зохиол мэдэхгүй.
03:47
There was no hiding it --
71
215125
1593
Үүнийг нуухын аргагүй байсан:
03:48
I was a clueless literary xenophobe.
72
216742
3323
уран зохиолын хувьд би гадныханд дургүй
ксенофоб байлаа.
03:52
So how on earth was I
going to read the world?
73
220541
2454
Тэгээд би яаж дэлхийг унших болж байна?
03:55
I was going to have to ask for help.
74
223777
1857
Би бусдаас тусламж хүсэхээр болсон.
03:57
So in October 2011, I registered my blog,
75
225658
3499
Ингээд 2011 оны 10 сард
энэ блогоо бүртгүүлсэн:
04:01
ayearofreadingtheworld.com,
76
229181
1771
ayearofreadingtheworld.com,
04:02
and I posted a short appeal online.
77
230976
2485
Тэгээд онлайнаар
хүсэлтээ бичиж үлдээв.
04:05
I explained who I was,
78
233863
1229
Өөрийгөө танилцуулаад
04:07
how narrow my reading had been,
79
235116
2008
миний уншлага ямар
дутуу дулимаг байсныг хэлж
04:09
and I asked anyone who cared to
80
237148
1857
хүмүүсээс дэлхийн бусад орны
04:11
to leave a message suggesting
what I might read
81
239029
2565
ном санал болгож
захидал үлдээхийг гуйсан.
04:13
from other parts of the planet.
82
241618
1684
04:15
Now, I had no idea whether
anyone would be interested,
83
243913
4073
Үүнийг хэн нэгэн сонирхох эсэхийг
би сайн мэдэхгүй байсан.
04:20
but within a few hours
of me posting that appeal online,
84
248010
3114
Гэвч намайг бичиж үлдээсний дараа
хэдхэн цагийн дотор
04:23
people started to get in touch.
85
251148
2436
хүмүүс надтай холбогдож эхэлсэн.
04:25
At first, it was friends and colleagues.
86
253608
2498
Эхлээд зөвхөн гэр бүл, найз нөхөд байлаа.
04:28
Then it was friends of friends.
87
256466
1551
Дараа нь найзын найз нар.
Удалгүй танихгүй хүмүүс хүртэл холбогдсон.
04:30
And pretty soon, it was strangers.
88
258383
2277
04:33
Four days after I put that appeal online,
89
261399
2802
Тэр хүсэлтийг бичээд 4 хоносны дараа
04:36
I got a message from a woman
called Rafidah in Kuala Lumpur.
90
264225
3731
Куала Лумпур дахь Рафида хэмээх
нэгэн эмэгтэйгээс захидал авлаа.
04:40
She said she loved
the sound of my project,
91
268292
2675
Түүнд миний юу хийх гэж байгаа таалагдаж,
04:42
could she go to her local
English-language bookshop
92
270991
2899
тэндхийн англи хэл дээрх
номын дэлгүүрээсээ
малайз ном аваад
над руу явуулж болох уу гэсэн байсан.
04:45
and choose my Malaysian book
and post it to me?
93
273914
3290
04:49
I accepted enthusiastically,
94
277912
1753
Би дуртайя зөвшөөрч
04:51
and a few weeks later,
95
279689
1502
хэдэн долоо хоногийн дараа
04:53
a package arrived containing
not one, but two books --
96
281215
4548
надад шуудангаар Рафидагийн сонгосон
нэг биш хоёр ном ирсэн:
04:59
Rafidah's choice from Malaysia,
97
287263
2418
нэг нь Малайз ном,
05:02
and a book from Singapore
that she had also picked out for me.
98
290908
3883
нөгөө нь Сингапураас
сонгосон ном байлаа.
05:08
Now, at the time, I was amazed
99
296428
2437
Тухайн үед би их гайхсан л даа.
05:10
that a stranger more than 6,000 miles away
100
298889
3576
Хэзээ ч уулзахгүй байж магадгүй
нэгэндээ туслахын тулд
тэртээ 10,000 км-ийн цаанаас танихгүй хүн
05:14
would go to such lengths to help someone
101
302489
1925
05:16
she would probably never meet.
102
304438
2059
ингэж их сэтгэл гарган ном явуулна гэдэгт.
05:19
But Rafidah's kindness proved
to be the pattern for that year.
103
307100
3651
Гэхдээ Рафидагийн сайхан сэтгэлийн жишээ
тэр жилдээ давтагдсаар л байсан.
05:23
Time and again, people went
out of their way to help me.
104
311240
3290
Хүмүүс надад туслахын тулд дахин дахин
сэтгэл гаргасаар л байлаа.
05:27
Some took on research on my behalf,
105
315226
2609
Зарим нь миний өмнөөс судалж,
05:29
and others made detours
on holidays and business trips
106
317859
3023
зарим нь ажил хэргээр эсвэл
амралтаар явж байхдаа
номын дэлгүүрийг
цаг гарган зорьж байсан.
05:32
to go to bookshops for me.
107
320906
1936
05:35
It turns out, if you want
to read the world,
108
323526
3236
Эцэст нь хэрвээ та дэлхийг
уншихыг хүсвэл,
05:38
if you want to encounter it
with an open mind,
109
326786
3401
бас үүнд нээлттэйгээр хандаж чадвал
05:42
the world will help you.
110
330211
1930
дэлхий чамд туслах болно.
05:45
When it came to countries
111
333118
1215
Англи хэл дээр хэвлэгдсэн ном
05:46
with little or no commercially
available literature in English,
112
334357
3506
харьцангүй бага эсвэл
огт байхгүй орнуудын хувьд
хүмүүс бүр ч илүү
сэтгэл гаргаж байсан.
05:49
people went further still.
113
337887
1813
05:52
Books often came from surprising sources.
114
340689
3212
Номнууд их сонирхолтой
эх сурвалжаас гарч ирж байлаа.
05:56
My Panamanian read, for example,
came through a conversation
115
344536
3039
Жишээлбэл Панамаас уншсан номыг маань
Твиттер дээр Панамын сувагтай
ярьж байхад санал болгосон.

Yes, the Panama Canal

it suggested that I might like to try

Би Морганы цахим хуудсыг олоод
захиа бичихдээ
06:19
asking if any of his

06:21
had been translated into English.
123
369948

англи руу орчуулагдсан эсэхийг асуулаа.
06:24
And he said that nothing
had been published,
124
372432
2431
Хариуд нь тэр аль ч ном нь
хараахан хэвлэгдээгүй байгаа ч
06:26

125
374887
2430
түүний "Алтан Хүлэг" зохиолын

126

хэвлэгдээгүй орчуулга байгаа гэсэн.
06:31
He emailed this to me,
127
379887
1338
Түүнийгээ надруу явуулж
06:33
allowing me to become
one of the first people ever
128
381249

06:38
Morgan was by no means the only wordsmith
130

06:54

136
402474
2022
эсвэл олдохоо байсан номнууд байсан.
06:56
giving me privileged glimpses
of some remarkable imaginary worlds.
137
404520
4708
Энэ нь гайхалтай төсөөллийн ертөнцийг
таньж мэдэх боломжийг надад олгосон.
07:02
I read, for example,
138
410008
1151
Жишээ нь би 19-р зуунд
07:03
about the Southern African king
Ngungunhane, who led the resistance
139
411183
4590
Португалчуудын эсрэг
хөдөлгөөнийг удирдсан
Өмнөд Африкийн Гүнгүнанэ хааны тухай,
07:07
against the Portuguese
in the 19th century;
140
415797
2662
07:11
and about marriage rituals
in a remote village
141
419113
2771
Туркменистаны Каспийн далайн

07:13
on the shores of the Caspian sea
in Turkmenistan.
142
421908
2998
гэрлэлтийн дэг ёсны тухай уншиж,
07:18
I met Kuwait's answer to Bridget Jones.
143
426524
3609
Бриджет Жонсын Кувайт
хувилбартай танилцсан.
07:22
(Laughter)
144
430450
2000
(Инээд)
07:25
And I read about an orgy
in a tree in Angola.
145
433301
3566
Бас Анголын модон дээрх
секс үдэшлэгийн тухай уншсан.
07:32
But perhaps the most amazing example
146
440870
2152
Гэхдээ надад дэлхийг уншуулахын тулд
07:35
of the lengths that people
were prepared to go to
147
443046
2404
хүмүүсийн хэр их сэтгэл гаргаж байгаагийн
07:37
to help me read the world,
148
445474
1627
хамгийн гайхалтай жишээ нь
07:39
came towards the end of my quest,
149
447125
2449
аяллын минь төгсгөлд гарч ирсэн.
07:41
when I tried to get hold of a book
from the tiny, Portuguese-speaking
150
449598
3834
Тухайн үед португал хэлээр ярьдаг
Африкын арлын Сан-Томе Присипи орноос
07:45
African island nation
of São Tomé and Príncipe.
151
453456
3267
нэгэн ном авах гэж би хичээж байлаа.
07:49
Now, having spent several months
trying everything I could think of to find
152
457364
3649
Хэдэн сарын турш тэрхүү орноос
англи хэл дээр орчуулагдсан ном олох гэж
бүхий л аргыг хэрэглэсний дараа
07:53
a book that had been translated
into English from the nation,
153
461037
3339
07:56
it seemed as though
the only option left to me
154
464400
2242
надад үлдсэн сүүлийн арга нь
07:58
was to see if I could get something
translated for me from scratch.
155
466666
3207
хэн нэгнээр орчуулуулах байлаа.
08:02
Now, I was really dubious
156
470404
1501
Би ч үүнд нээх их найдсангүй,
08:03
whether anyone was going
to want to help with this,
157
471929
2396
хэн нэгэн үүнд цаг заваа зарцуулж
08:06
and give up their time
for something like that.
158
474349
2499
надад туслах болов уу даа
гэж эргэлзэж байсан.
08:09
But, within a week of me putting
a call out on Twitter and Facebook
159
477525
4263
Гэтэл португал хэлтэй хүмүүст зориулан
Twitter, Facebook-т зарлал байршуулаад
7 хоногийн дотор л
08:13
for Portuguese speakers,
160
481812
1954
бүгдийг нь оролцуулж боломгүй
олон хүн надад хандсан.
08:15
I had more people than I could
involve in the project,
161
483790
3571
Тэдний дунд Нобелийн шагналтан
Жозе Сарамагогийн бүтээлийг орчуулсан,
08:19
including Margaret Jull Costa,
a leader in her field,
162
487385
4358
08:23
who has translated the work
of Nobel Prize winner José Saramago.
163
491767
5301
салбартаа тэргүүлэгч
Маргарет Жулл Коста хүртэл байсан.
08:30
With my nine volunteers in place,
164
498443
1935
9 сайн дурын орчуулагчтай
болсны дараа
08:32
I managed to find a book
by a São Toméan author
165
500402
2588
нэгэн Сан-Томе арлын зохиолчийн бүтээлээс
08:35
that I could buy enough copies of online.
166
503014
2510
онлайнаар аль болох олон хувь
авч болох номыг олсон.
08:37
Here's one of them.
167
505548
1154
Энд нэг хувь нь байна.
08:39
And I sent a copy out
to each of my volunteers.
168
507268
3564
Ингээд би орчуулагч нартаа
нэг нэг хувийг явуулсан.
08:42
They all took on a couple
of short stories from this collection,
169
510856
3174
Тэд энэхүү түүвэр зохиолоос
хэд хэдэн богино өгүүллэг аваад
08:46
stuck to their word, sent
their translations back to me,
170
514054
3627
хэлсэн амандаа хүрч надад
орчуулгаа эргээд явуулсан.
08:49
and within six weeks,
I had the entire book to read.
171
517705
3789
6 долоо хоногийн дараа гэхэд л
тэр номыг бүхлээр унших боломжтой болсон.
08:54
In that case, as I found so often
during my year of reading the world,
172
522422
4462
Дэлхийг унших нэг жилийн явцад надад
байнга тохиолдож байсан шиг яг энэ үед
08:58
my not knowing and being open
about my limitations
173
526908
4085
мэдэхгүй байх бас өөрийн сул талаа
бүрэн хүлээн зөвшөөрөх нь
09:03
had become a big opportunity.
174
531017
2141
миний хамгийн том боломж болж хувирсан.
09:05
When it came to São Tomé and Príncipe,
175
533935
2187
Сан-Томе Присипигийн хувьд
09:08
it was a chance not only
to learn something new
176
536146
3346
энэ бол шинэ зүйл сурах эсвэл
09:11
and discover a new collection of stories,
177
539516
2675
зохиолын түүврийг шинээр олж нээхээс гадна
09:14
but also to bring together
a group of people
178
542215
2946
бүлэг хүмүүсийг нэгтгэж
09:17
and facilitate a joint creative endeavor.
179
545185
3229
хамтарсан бүтээлч үйлсийг
эхлүүлэх боломж байлаа.
09:20
My weakness had become
the project's strength.
180
548901
3900
Миний сул тал төслийн маань
давуу тал болсон.
09:25
The books I read that year
opened my eyes to many things.
181
553929
3556
Тэр жил уншсан номнууд
миний нүдийг нээж өгсөн.
09:29
As those who enjoy reading will know,
182
557509
2187
Ном унших дуртай хүмүүсийн мэддэгээр
09:31
books have an extraordinary power
to take you out of yourself
183
559720
3780
ном гэдэг өөр хүний оронд байж үзэх
09:35
and into someone else's mindset,
184
563524
2144
тэрхүү боломжийг олгодог гайхалтай хүчтэй.
09:37
so that, for a while at least,
185
565692
1842
Ингэснээрээ түрхэн зуур ч гэсэн
09:39
you look at the world
through different eyes.
186
567558
2225
хорвоо ертөнцийг өөр нүдээр хардаг.
09:42
That can be an uncomfortable experience,
187
570390
2463
Энэ нь тааламжгүй мэдрэмж
төрүүлж магадгүй.
09:44
particularly if you're reading a book
188
572877
1772
Ялангуяа таны үнэт зүйлээс
өөрийг эрхэмлэдэг
09:46
from a culture that may have quite
different values to your own.
189
574673
3424
соёлтой орны ном уншиж байгаа бол.
09:50
But it can also be really enlightening.
190
578601
2149
Бас ном унших нь
их зүйлийг ойлгуулж өгдөг.
09:53
Wrestling with unfamiliar ideas
can help clarify your own thinking.
191
581402
3914
Танил биш үзэл санааг ойлгохыг хичээх нь
өөрийн бодол санаагаа цэгцлэхэд тус болно.
09:57
And it can also show up blind spots
192
585742
2167
Мөн дэлхий ертөнцийг харах хүрээний
харагдахгүй байгаа хэсгийг
тодотгож өгдөг.
09:59
in the way you might have
been looking at the world.
193
587933
2642
10:03
When I looked back at much
of the English-language literature
194
591072
2882
Жишээлбэл багаасаа уншсан англи хэл дээрх
ном зохиолуудаа эргэн харахад
10:05
I'd grown up with, for example,
195
593978
1686
10:07
I began to see how narrow a lot of it was,
196
595688
3037
дэлхийд үзэж харах зөндөө зүйл байхад
тэдгээрийн ихэнх нь
ямар явцуу болохыг олж харсан.
10:10
compared to the richness
that the world has to offer.
197
598749
2812
10:14
And as the pages turned,
198
602886
2162
Хуудас эргүүлэх бүрт
10:17
something else started to happen, too.
199
605072
2466
өөр бас нэгэн зүйл эхэлсэн.
10:20
Little by little,
200
608150
1151
Бага багаар
10:21
that long list of countries that
I'd started the year with, changed
201
609325
4285
тэр жилийг эхлүүлсэн
улс орнуудын урт жагсаалт
10:25
from a rather dry, academic
register of place names
202
613634
4359
зүгээр нэг газар усны нэр байхаа больж
10:30
into living, breathing entities.
203
618017
2681
илүү амьтай, биетэй болж ирсэн.
10:33
Now, I don't want to suggest
that it's at all possible
204
621475
2723
Аливаа нэг орноос ганц ном уншаад л
10:36
to get a rounded picture of a country
simply by reading one book.
205
624222
4206
тухай орны тухай бүрэн мэдлэгтэй
болчихно гэж байгаа юм биш.
10:41
But cumulatively, the stories
I read that year
206
629010
3589
Гэхдээ тэр жил уншсан зохиолууд нийтдээ
10:44
made me more alive than ever before
207
632623
3060
манай гараг дэлхийн маш баялаг,
олон төрлийн бас
10:47
to the richness, diversity and complexity
of our remarkable planet.
208
635707
6074
нарийн түвэгтэй байдлыг
амьдаар мэдрүүлэх шиг болсон.
10:54
It was as though the world's stories
209
642654
1993
Энэ яг л дэлхийн түүх зохиол,
10:56
and the people who'd gone
to such lengths to help me read them
210
644671
3900
тэдгээрийг надад уншуулах гэж
сэтгэл гаргасан хүмүүс бүгд
11:00
had made it real to me.
211
648595
1905
үүнийг илүү бодит болгох шиг.
11:04
These days, when I look at my bookshelves
212
652086
2535
Одоо би номын тавиураа хараад,
11:06
or consider the works on my e-reader,
213
654645
3125
эсвэл цахим ном уншуураа асаахад
11:09
they tell a rather different story.
214
657794
2115
тэд арай л өөр түүх өгүүлдэг.
11:12
It's the story of the power
books have to connect us
215
660649
3346
Энэ бол улс төр, газарзүй, соёл,
нийгэм, шашинг үл харгалзан
11:16
across political, geographical,
cultural, social, religious divides.
216
664019
4745
ном биднийг холбох хүч чадлыг
харуулах түүх.
11:21
It's the tale of the potential
human beings have to work together.
217
669422
4142
Энэ бол хүмүүсийн хамтарч чадах
боломж бололцоог харуулсан тууж.
11:26
And, it's testament
218
674320
1342
Бас энэ бол интернетийн ачаар
11:27
to the extraordinary times we live
in, where, thanks to the Internet,
219
675686
4623
танихгүй хүн дэлхийн нөгөө захад байгаа,
хэзээ ч уулзахгүй байж магадгүй нэгэндээ
11:32
it's easier than ever before
220
680333

11:47
And I hope many more people will join me.
224
695074
2849
Бас олон хүн надтай нэгдэнэ
гэж найдаж байна.
11:49
If we all read more widely,
there'd be more incentive
225
697947

Хэрэв бид илүү олуулаа уншдаг болвол
