ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Brian Greene - Physicist
Brian Greene is perhaps the best-known proponent of superstring theory, the idea that minuscule strands of energy vibrating in a higher dimensional space-time create every particle and force in the universe.

Why you should listen

Greene, a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, has focused on unified theories for more than 25 years, and has written several best-selling and non-technical books on the subject including The Elegant Universe, a Pulitzer finalist, and The Fabric of the Cosmos — each of which has been adapted into a NOVA mini-series. His latest book, The Hidden Reality, explores the possibility that our universe is not the only universe.

Greene believes science must be brought to general audiences in new and compelling ways, such as his live stage odyssey, Icarus at the Edge of Time, with original orchestral score by Philip Glass, and the annual World Science Festival, which he co-founded in 2008 with journalist Tracy Day.

Brian Greene: Is our universe the only universe?

And today, after briefly describing what they found,
6
13000
2000
00:30
I'm going to tell you about a highly controversial framework
7
15000
3000
00:33
for explaining their discovery,
8
18000
3000
00:36
namely the possibility
9
21000
2000
00:38
that way beyond the Earth,
10
23000
2000
00:40
the Milky Way and other distant galaxies,
11
25000
3000
00:43
we may find that our universe
12
28000
2000
00:45
is not the only universe,
13
30000
2000
00:47
but is instead
14
32000
2000
00:49
part of a vast complex of universes
15
34000
2000
00:51
that we call the multiverse.
16
36000
2000
00:53
Now the idea of a multiverse is a strange one.
17
38000
3000
00:56
I mean, most of us were raised to believe
18
41000
2000
00:58
that the word "universe" means everything.
19
43000
3000
01:01
And I say most of us with forethought,
20
46000
3000
01:04
as my four-year-old daughter has heard me speak of these ideas since she was born.
21
49000
3000
01:07
And last year I was holding her
22
52000
2000
01:09
and I said, "Sophia,
23
54000
2000
01:11
I love you more than anything in the universe."
24
56000
3000
01:14
And she turned to me and said, "Daddy,
25
59000
2000
01:16
universe or multiverse?"
26
61000
2000
01:18
(Laughter)
27
63000
3000
01:21
But barring such an anomalous upbringing,
28
66000
3000
01:24
it is strange to imagine
29
69000
2000
01:26
other realms separate from ours,
30
71000
2000
01:28
most with fundamentally different features,
31
73000
2000
01:30
that would rightly be called universes of their own.
32
75000
3000
01:33
And yet,
33
78000
2000
01:35
speculative though the idea surely is,
34
80000
2000
01:37
I aim to convince you
35
82000
2000
01:39
that there's reason for taking it seriously,
36
84000
2000
01:41
as it just might be right.
37
86000
2000
01:43
I'm going to tell the story of the multiverse in three parts.
38
88000
3000
01:46
In part one,
39
91000
2000
01:48
I'm going to describe those Nobel Prize-winning results
40
93000
2000
01:50
and to highlight a profound mystery
41
95000
2000
01:52
which those results revealed.
42
97000
2000
01:54
In part two,
43
99000
2000
01:56
I'll offer a solution to that mystery.
44
101000
2000
01:58
It's based on an approach called string theory,
45
103000
2000
02:00
and that's where the idea of the multiverse
46
105000
2000
02:02
will come into the story.
47
107000
2000
02:04
Finally, in part three,
48
109000
2000
02:06
I'm going to describe a cosmological theory
49
111000
2000
02:08
called inflation,
50
113000
2000
02:10
which will pull all the pieces of the story together.
51
115000
3000
02:13
Okay, part one starts back in 1929
52
118000
4000
02:17
when the great astronomer Edwin Hubble
53
122000
2000
02:19
realized that the distant galaxies
54
124000
3000
02:22
were all rushing away from us,
55
127000
2000
02:24
establishing that space itself is stretching,
56
129000
2000
02:26
it's expanding.
57
131000
2000
02:28
Now this was revolutionary.
58
133000
3000
02:31
The prevailing wisdom was that on the largest of scales
59
136000
3000
02:34
the universe was static.
60
139000
2000
02:36
But even so,
61
141000
2000
02:38
there was one thing that everyone was certain of:
62
143000
3000
02:41
The expansion must be slowing down.
63
146000
3000
02:44
That, much as the gravitational pull of the Earth
64
149000
3000
02:47
slows the ascent of an apple tossed upward,
65
152000
3000
02:50
the gravitational pull
66
155000
2000
02:52
of each galaxy on every other
67
157000
2000
02:54
must be slowing
68
159000
2000
02:56
the expansion of space.
69
161000
2000
02:58
Now let's fast-forward to the 1990s
70
163000
3000
03:01
when those two teams of astronomers
71
166000
2000
03:03
I mentioned at the outset
72
168000
2000
03:05
were inspired by this reasoning
73
170000
2000
03:07
to measure the rate
74
172000
2000
03:09
at which the expansion has been slowing.
75
174000
2000
03:11
And they did this
76
176000
2000
03:13
by painstaking observations
77
178000
2000
03:15
of numerous distant galaxies,
78
180000
2000
03:17
allowing them to chart
79
182000
2000
03:19
how the expansion rate has changed over time.
80
184000
3000
03:22
Here's the surprise:
81
187000
3000
03:25
They found that the expansion is not slowing down.
82
190000
3000
03:28
Instead they found that it's speeding up,
83
193000
2000
03:30
going faster and faster.
84
195000
2000
03:32
That's like tossing an apple upward
85
197000
2000
03:34
and it goes up faster and faster.
86
199000
2000
03:36
Now if you saw an apple do that,
87
201000
2000
03:38
you'd want to know why.
88
203000
2000
03:40
What's pushing on it?
89
205000
2000
03:42
Similarly, the astronomers' results
90
207000
2000
03:44
are surely well-deserving of the Nobel Prize,
91
209000
3000
03:47
but they raised an analogous question.
92
212000
4000
03:51
What force is driving all galaxies
93
216000
2000
03:53
to rush away from every other
94
218000
3000
03:56
at an ever-quickening speed?
95
221000
3000
03:59
Well the most promising answer
96
224000
2000
04:01
comes from an old idea of Einstein's.
97
226000
3000
04:04
You see, we are all used to gravity
98
229000
2000
04:06
being a force that does one thing,
99
231000
3000
04:09
pulls objects together.
100
234000
2000
04:11
But in Einstein's theory of gravity,
101
236000
2000
04:13
his general theory of relativity,
102
238000
2000
04:15
gravity can also push things apart.
103
240000
3000
04:18
How? Well according to Einstein's math,
104
243000
3000
04:21
if space is uniformly filled
105
246000
2000
04:23
with an invisible energy,
106
248000
2000
04:25
sort of like a uniform, invisible mist,
107
250000
3000
04:28
then the gravity generated by that mist
108
253000
3000
04:31
would be repulsive,
109
256000
2000
04:33
repulsive gravity,
110
258000
2000
04:35
which is just what we need to explain the observations.
111
260000
3000
04:38
Because the repulsive gravity
112
263000
2000
04:40
of an invisible energy in space --
113
265000
2000
04:42
we now call it dark energy,
114
267000
2000
04:44
but I've made it smokey white here so you can see it --
115
269000
3000
04:47
its repulsive gravity
116
272000
2000
04:49
would cause each galaxy to push against every other,
117
274000
2000
04:51
driving expansion to speed up,
118
276000
2000
04:53
not slow down.
119
278000
2000
04:55
And this explanation
120
280000
2000
04:57
represents great progress.
121
282000
2000
04:59
But I promised you a mystery
122
284000
3000
05:02
here in part one.
123
287000
2000
05:04
Here it is.
124
289000
2000
05:06
When the astronomers worked out
125
291000
2000
05:08
how much of this dark energy
126
293000
3000
05:11
must be infusing space
127
296000
2000
05:13
to account for the cosmic speed up,
128
298000
2000
05:15
look at what they found.
129
300000
2000
05:24
This number is small.
130
309000
2000
05:26
Expressed in the relevant unit,
131
311000
2000
05:28
it is spectacularly small.
132
313000
2000
05:30
And the mystery is to explain this peculiar number.
133
315000
3000
05:33
We want this number
134
318000
2000
05:35
to emerge from the laws of physics,
135
320000
2000
05:37
but so far no one has found a way to do that.
136
322000
3000
05:40
Now you might wonder,
137
325000
3000
05:43
should you care?
138
328000
2000
05:45
Maybe explaining this number
139
330000
2000
05:47
is just a technical issue,
140
332000
2000
05:49
a technical detail of interest to experts,
141
334000
3000
05:52
but of no relevance to anybody else.
142
337000
2000
05:54
Well it surely is a technical detail,
143
339000
3000
05:57
but some details really matter.
144
342000
2000
05:59
Some details provide
145
344000
2000
06:01
windows into uncharted realms of reality,
146
346000
2000
06:03
and this peculiar number may be doing just that,
147
348000
3000
06:06
as the only approach that's so far made headway to explain it
148
351000
3000
06:09
invokes the possibility of other universes --
149
354000
3000
06:12
an idea that naturally emerges from string theory,
150
357000
3000
06:15
which takes me to part two: string theory.
151
360000
3000
06:18
So hold the mystery of the dark energy
152
363000
4000
06:22
in the back of your mind
153
367000
2000
06:24
as I now go on to tell you
154
369000
2000
06:26
three key things about string theory.
155
371000
3000
06:29
First off, what is it?
156
374000
2000
06:31
Well it's an approach to realize Einstein's dream
157
376000
3000
06:34
of a unified theory of physics,
158
379000
3000
06:37
a single overarching framework
159
382000
2000
06:39
that would be able to describe
160
384000
2000
06:41
all the forces at work in the universe.
161
386000
2000
06:43
And the central idea of string theory
162
388000
2000
06:45
is quite straightforward.
163
390000
2000
06:47
It says that if you examine
164
392000
2000
06:49
any piece of matter ever more finely,
165
394000
2000
06:51
at first you'll find molecules
166
396000
2000
06:53
and then you'll find atoms and subatomic particles.
167
398000
3000
06:56
But the theory says that if you could probe smaller,
168
401000
2000
06:58
much smaller than we can with existing technology,
169
403000
3000
07:01
you'd find something else inside these particles --
170
406000
3000
07:04
a little tiny vibrating filament of energy,
171
409000
3000
07:07
a little tiny vibrating string.
172
412000
3000
07:10
And just like the strings on a violin,
173
415000
2000
07:12
they can vibrate in different patterns
174
417000
2000
07:14
producing different musical notes.
175
419000
2000
07:16
These little fundamental strings,
176
421000
2000
07:18
when they vibrate in different patterns,
177
423000
2000
07:20
they produce different kinds of particles --
178
425000
2000
07:22
so electrons, quarks, neutrinos, photons,
179
427000
2000
07:24
all other particles
180
429000
2000
07:26
would be united into a single framework,
181
431000
2000
07:28
as they would all arise from vibrating strings.
182
433000
3000
07:31
It's a compelling picture,
183
436000
3000
07:34
a kind of cosmic symphony,
184
439000
2000
07:36
where all the richness
185
441000
2000
07:38
that we see in the world around us
186
443000
2000
07:40
emerges from the music
187
445000
2000
07:42
that these little, tiny strings can play.
188
447000
3000
07:45
But there's a cost
189
450000
2000
07:47
to this elegant unification,
190
452000
2000
07:49
because years of research
191
454000
2000
07:51
have shown that the math of string theory doesn't quite work.
192
456000
3000
07:54
It has internal inconsistencies,
193
459000
2000
07:56
unless we allow
194
461000
2000
07:58
for something wholly unfamiliar --
195
463000
3000
08:01
extra dimensions of space.
196
466000
3000
08:04
That is, we all know about the usual three dimensions of space.
197
469000
3000
08:07
And you can think about those
198
472000
2000
08:09
as height, width and depth.
199
474000
3000
08:12
But string theory says that, on fantastically small scales,
200
477000
3000
08:15
there are additional dimensions
201
480000
2000
08:17
crumpled to a tiny size so small
202
482000
2000
08:19
that we have not detected them.
203
484000
2000
08:21
But even though the dimensions are hidden,
204
486000
2000
08:23
they would have an impact on things that we can observe
205
488000
3000
08:26
because the shape of the extra dimensions
206
491000
3000
08:29
constrains how the strings can vibrate.
207
494000
3000
08:32
And in string theory,
208
497000
2000
08:34
vibration determines everything.
209
499000
3000
08:37
So particle masses, the strengths of forces,
210
502000
2000
08:39
and most importantly, the amount of dark energy
211
504000
3000
08:42
would be determined
212
507000
2000
08:44
by the shape of the extra dimensions.
213
509000
2000
08:46
So if we knew the shape of the extra dimensions,
214
511000
3000
08:49
we should be able to calculate these features,
215
514000
3000
08:52
calculate the amount of dark energy.
216
517000
3000
08:55
The challenge
217
520000
2000
08:57
is we don't know
218
522000
2000
08:59
the shape of the extra dimensions.
219
524000
3000
09:02
All we have
220
527000
2000
09:04
is a list of candidate shapes
221
529000
2000
09:06
allowed by the math.
222
531000
3000
09:09
Now when these ideas were first developed,
223
534000
2000
09:11
there were only about five different candidate shapes,
224
536000
2000
09:13
so you can imagine
225
538000
2000
09:15
analyzing them one-by-one
226
540000
2000
09:17
to determine if any yield
227
542000
2000
09:19
the physical features we observe.
228
544000
2000
09:21
But over time the list grew
229
546000
2000
09:23
as researchers found other candidate shapes.
230
548000
2000
09:25
From five, the number grew into the hundreds and then the thousands --
231
550000
3000
09:28
A large, but still manageable, collection to analyze,
232
553000
3000
09:31
since after all,
233
556000
2000
09:33
graduate students need something to do.
234
558000
3000
09:36
But then the list continued to grow
235
561000
2000
09:38
into the millions and the billions, until today.
236
563000
3000
09:41
The list of candidate shapes
237
566000
2000
09:43
has soared to about 10 to the 500.
238
568000
5000
09:48
So, what to do?
239
573000
3000
09:51
Well some researchers lost heart,
240
576000
3000
09:54
concluding that was so many candidate shapes for the extra dimensions,
241
579000
3000
09:57
each giving rise to different physical features,
242
582000
3000
10:00
string theory would never make
243
585000
2000
10:02
definitive, testable predictions.
244
587000
2000
10:04
But others turned this issue on its head,
245
589000
4000
10:08
taking us to the possibility of a multiverse.
246
593000
2000
10:10
Here's the idea.
247
595000
2000
10:12
Maybe each of these shapes is on an equal footing with every other.
248
597000
3000
10:15
Each is as real as every other,
249
600000
2000
10:17
in the sense
250
602000
2000
10:19
that there are many universes,
251
604000
2000
10:21
each with a different shape, for the extra dimensions.
252
606000
3000
10:24
And this radical proposal
253
609000
2000
10:26
has a profound impact on this mystery:
254
611000
3000
10:29
the amount of dark energy revealed by the Nobel Prize-winning results.
255
614000
3000
10:32
Because you see,
256
617000
2000
10:34
if there are other universes,
257
619000
3000
10:37
and if those universes
258
622000
2000
10:39
each have, say, a different shape for the extra dimensions,
259
624000
4000
10:43
then the physical features of each universe will be different,
260
628000
2000
10:45
and in particular,
261
630000
2000
10:47
the amount of dark energy in each universe
262
632000
2000
10:49
will be different.
263
634000
2000
10:51
Which means that the mystery
264
636000
2000
10:53
of explaining the amount of dark energy we've now measured
265
638000
2000
10:55
would take on a wholly different character.
266
640000
3000
10:58
In this context,
267
643000
2000
11:00
the laws of physics can't explain one number for the dark energy
268
645000
3000
11:03
because there isn't just one number,
269
648000
3000
11:06
there are many numbers.
270
651000
2000
11:08
Which means
271
653000
2000
11:10
we have been asking the wrong question.
272
655000
3000
11:13
It's that the right question to ask is,
273
658000
2000
11:15
why do we humans find ourselves in a universe
274
660000
3000
11:18
with a particular amount of dark energy we've measured
275
663000
3000
11:21
instead of any of the other possibilities
276
666000
3000
11:24
that are out there?
277
669000
2000
11:26
And that's a question on which we can make headway.
278
671000
3000
11:29
Because those universes
279
674000
2000
11:31
that have much more dark energy than ours,
280
676000
2000
11:33
whenever matter tries to clump into galaxies,
281
678000
3000
11:36
the repulsive push of the dark energy is so strong
282
681000
3000
11:39
that it blows the clump apart
283
684000
2000
11:41
and galaxies don't form.
284
686000
2000
11:43
And in those universes that have much less dark energy,
285
688000
3000
11:46
well they collapse back on themselves so quickly
286
691000
2000
11:48
that, again, galaxies don't form.
287
693000
3000
11:51
And without galaxies, there are no stars, no planets
288
696000
3000
11:54
and no chance
289
699000
2000
11:56
for our form of life
290
701000
2000
11:58
to exist in those other universes.
291
703000
2000
12:00
So we find ourselves in a universe
292
705000
2000
12:02
with the particular amount of dark energy we've measured
293
707000
3000
12:05
simply because our universe has conditions
294
710000
3000
12:08
hospitable to our form of life.
295
713000
4000
12:12
And that would be that.
296
717000
2000
12:14
Mystery solved,
297
719000
2000
12:16
multiverse found.
298
721000
2000
12:18
Now some find this explanation unsatisfying.
299
723000
5000
12:23
We're used to physics
300
728000
2000
12:25
giving us definitive explanations for the features we observe.
301
730000
3000
12:28
But the point is,
302
733000
2000
12:30
if the feature you're observing
303
735000
3000
12:33
can and does take on
304
738000
2000
12:35
a wide variety of different values
305
740000
2000
12:37
across the wider landscape of reality,
306
742000
3000
12:40
then thinking one explanation
307
745000
2000
12:42
for a particular value
308
747000
2000
12:44
is simply misguided.
309
749000
3000
12:47
An early example
310
752000
2000
12:49
comes from the great astronomer Johannes Kepler
311
754000
3000
12:52
who was obsessed with understanding
312
757000
2000
12:54
a different number --
313
759000
2000
12:56
why the Sun is 93 million miles away from the Earth.
314
761000
4000
13:00
And he worked for decades trying to explain this number,
315
765000
3000
13:03
but he never succeeded, and we know why.
316
768000
3000
13:06
Kepler was asking
317
771000
2000
13:08
the wrong question.
318
773000
2000
13:10
We now know that there are many planets
319
775000
3000
13:13
at a wide variety of different distances from their host stars.
320
778000
3000
13:16
So hoping that the laws of physics
321
781000
3000
13:19
will explain one particular number, 93 million miles,
322
784000
3000
13:22
well that is simply wrongheaded.
323
787000
3000
13:25
Instead the right question to ask is,
324
790000
2000
13:27
why do we humans find ourselves on a planet
325
792000
3000
13:30
at this particular distance,
326
795000
2000
13:32
instead of any of the other possibilities?
327
797000
3000
13:35
And again, that's a question we can answer.
328
800000
3000
13:38
Those planets which are much closer to a star like the Sun
329
803000
3000
13:41
would be so hot
330
806000
2000
13:43
that our form of life wouldn't exist.
331
808000
2000
13:45
And those planets that are much farther away from the star,
332
810000
3000
13:48
well they're so cold
333
813000
2000
13:50
that, again, our form of life would not take hold.
334
815000
2000
13:52
So we find ourselves
335
817000
2000
13:54
on a planet at this particular distance
336
819000
2000
13:56
simply because it yields conditions
337
821000
2000
13:58
vital to our form of life.
338
823000
3000
14:01
And when it comes to planets and their distances,
339
826000
3000
14:04
this clearly is the right kind of reasoning.
340
829000
4000
14:08
The point is,
341
833000
2000
14:10
when it comes to universes and the dark energy that they contain,
342
835000
3000
14:13
it may also be the right kind of reasoning.
343
838000
4000
14:17
One key difference, of course,
344
842000
3000
14:20
is we know that there are other planets out there,
345
845000
2000
14:22
but so far I've only speculated on the possibility
346
847000
3000
14:25
that there might be other universes.
347
850000
2000
14:27
So to pull it all together,
348
852000
2000
14:29
we need a mechanism
349
854000
2000
14:31
that can actually generate other universes.
350
856000
3000
14:34
And that takes me to my final part, part three.
351
859000
3000
14:37
Because such a mechanism has been found
352
862000
3000
14:40
by cosmologists trying to understand the Big Bang.
353
865000
3000
14:43
You see, when we speak of the Big Bang,
354
868000
2000
14:45
we often have an image
355
870000
2000
14:47
of a kind of cosmic explosion
356
872000
2000
14:49
that created our universe
357
874000
2000
14:51
and set space rushing outward.
358
876000
3000
14:54
But there's a little secret.
359
879000
2000
14:56
The Big Bang leaves out something pretty important,
360
881000
3000
14:59
the Bang.
361
884000
2000
15:01
It tells us how the universe evolved after the Bang,
362
886000
3000
15:04
but gives us no insight
363
889000
2000
15:06
into what would have powered the Bang itself.
364
891000
4000
15:10
And this gap was finally filled
365
895000
2000
15:12
by an enhanced version of the Big Bang theory.
366
897000
2000
15:14
It's called inflationary cosmology,
367
899000
3000
15:17
which identified a particular kind of fuel
368
902000
4000
15:21
that would naturally generate
369
906000
2000
15:23
an outward rush of space.
370
908000
2000
15:25
The fuel is based on something called a quantum field,
371
910000
3000
15:28
but the only detail that matters for us
372
913000
3000
15:31
is that this fuel proves to be so efficient
373
916000
3000
15:34
that it's virtually impossible
374
919000
2000
15:36
to use it all up,
375
921000
2000
15:38
which means in the inflationary theory,
376
923000
2000
15:40
the Big Bang giving rise to our universe
377
925000
3000
15:43
is likely not a one-time event.
378
928000
3000
15:46
Instead the fuel not only generated our Big Bang,
379
931000
3000
15:49
but it would also generate countless other Big Bangs,
380
934000
6000
15:55
each giving rise to its own separate universe
381
940000
3000
15:58
with our universe becoming but one bubble
382
943000
2000
16:00
in a grand cosmic bubble bath of universes.
383
945000
3000
16:03
And now, when we meld this with string theory,
384
948000
2000
16:05
here's the picture we're led to.
385
950000
2000
16:07
Each of these universes has extra dimensions.
386
952000
2000
16:09
The extra dimensions take on a wide variety of different shapes.
387
954000
3000
16:12
The different shapes yield different physical features.
388
957000
3000
16:15
And we find ourselves in one universe instead of another
389
960000
3000
16:18
simply because it's only in our universe
390
963000
3000
16:21
that the physical features, like the amount of dark energy,
391
966000
3000
16:24
are right for our form of life to take hold.
392
969000
4000
16:28
And this is the compelling but highly controversial picture
393
973000
3000
16:31
of the wider cosmos
394
976000
2000
16:33
that cutting-edge observation and theory
395
978000
2000
16:35
have now led us to seriously consider.
396
980000
4000
16:39
One big remaining question, of course, is,
397
984000
4000
16:43
could we ever confirm
398
988000
3000
16:46
the existence of other universes?
399
991000
3000
16:49
Well let me describe
400
994000
2000
16:51
one way that might one day happen.
401
996000
3000
16:54
The inflationary theory
402
999000
2000
16:56
already has strong observational support.
403
1001000
2000
16:58
Because the theory predicts
404
1003000
2000
17:00
that the Big Bang would have been so intense
405
1005000
2000
17:02
that as space rapidly expanded,
406
1007000
3000
17:05
tiny quantum jitters from the micro world
407
1010000
2000
17:07
would have been stretched out to the macro world,
408
1012000
3000
17:10
yielding a distinctive fingerprint,
409
1015000
3000
17:13
a pattern of slightly hotter spots and slightly colder spots,
410
1018000
2000
17:15
across space,
411
1020000
2000
17:17
which powerful telescopes have now observed.
412
1022000
3000
17:20
Going further, if there are other universes,
413
1025000
3000
17:23
the theory predicts that every so often
414
1028000
2000
17:25
those universes can collide.
415
1030000
2000
17:27
And if our universe got hit by another,
416
1032000
2000
17:29
that collision
417
1034000
2000
17:31
would generate an additional subtle pattern
418
1036000
2000
17:33
of temperature variations across space
419
1038000
2000
17:35
that we might one day
420
1040000
2000
17:37
be able to detect.
421
1042000
2000
17:39
And so exotic as this picture is,
422
1044000
3000
17:42
it may one day be grounded
423
1047000
2000
17:44
in observations,
424
1049000
2000
17:46
establishing the existence of other universes.
425
1051000
3000
17:49
I'll conclude
426
1054000
2000
17:51
with a striking implication
427
1056000
3000
17:54
of all these ideas
428
1059000
2000
17:56
for the very far future.
429
1061000
2000
17:58
You see, we learned
430
1063000
2000
18:00
that our universe is not static,
431
1065000
2000
18:02
that space is expanding,
432
1067000
2000
18:04
that that expansion is speeding up
433
1069000
2000
18:06
and that there might be other universes
434
1071000
2000
18:08
all by carefully examining
435
1073000
2000
18:10
faint pinpoints of starlight
436
1075000
2000
18:12
coming to us from distant galaxies.
437
1077000
3000
18:15
But because the expansion is speeding up,
438
1080000
3000
18:18
in the very far future,
439
1083000
2000
18:20
those galaxies will rush away so far and so fast
440
1085000
3000
18:23
that we won't be able to see them --
441
1088000
3000
18:26
not because of technological limitations,
442
1091000
2000
18:28
but because of the laws of physics.
443
1093000
2000
18:30
The light those galaxies emit,
444
1095000
2000
18:32
even traveling at the fastest speed, the speed of light,
445
1097000
3000
18:35
will not be able to overcome
446
1100000
2000
18:37
the ever-widening gulf between us.
447
1102000
3000
18:40
So astronomers in the far future
448
1105000
2000
18:42
looking out into deep space
449
1107000
2000
18:44
will see nothing but an endless stretch
450
1109000
3000
18:47
of static, inky, black stillness.
451
1112000
4000
18:51
And they will conclude
452
1116000
2000
18:53
that the universe is static and unchanging
453
1118000
2000
18:55
and populated by a single central oasis of matter
454
1120000
3000
18:58
that they inhabit --
455
1123000
2000
19:00
a picture of the cosmos
456
1125000
2000
19:02
that we definitively know to be wrong.
457
1127000
3000
19:05
Now maybe those future astronomers will have records
458
1130000
3000
19:08
handed down from an earlier era,
459
1133000
2000
19:10
like ours,
460
1135000
2000
19:12
attesting to an expanding cosmos
461
1137000
2000
19:14
teeming with galaxies.
462
1139000
2000
19:16
But would those future astronomers
463
1141000
2000
19:18
believe such ancient knowledge?
464
1143000
3000
19:21
Or would they believe
465
1146000
2000
19:23
in the black, static empty universe
466
1148000
3000
19:26
that their own state-of-the-art observations reveal?
467
1151000
4000
19:30
I suspect the latter.
468
1155000
2000
19:32
Which means that we are living
469
1157000
2000
19:34
through a remarkably privileged era
470
1159000
3000
19:37
when certain deep truths about the cosmos
471
1162000
2000
19:39
are still within reach
472
1164000
2000
19:41
of the human spirit of exploration.
473
1166000
2000
19:43
It appears that it may not always be that way.
474
1168000
5000
19:48
Because today's astronomers,
475
1173000
2000
19:50
by turning powerful telescopes to the sky,
476
1175000
3000
19:53
have captured a handful of starkly informative photons --
477
1178000
3000
19:56
a kind of cosmic telegram
478
1181000
3000
19:59
billions of years in transit.
479
1184000
2000
20:01
and the message echoing across the ages is clear.
480
1186000
4000
20:05
Sometimes nature guards her secrets
481
1190000
3000
20:08
with the unbreakable grip
482
1193000
2000
20:10
of physical law.
483
1195000
2000
20:12
Sometimes the true nature of reality beckons
484
1197000
4000
20:16
from just beyond the horizon.
485
1201000
3000
20:19
Thank you very much.
