As a student of adversity,

Como um estudioso de adversidades,
eu tenho me admirado ao longo dos anos
00:16
I've been struck over the years
1
4192
1508
00:17
by how some people
2
5700
1992
com a maneira com que algumas pessoas
00:19
with major challenges
3
7692
1404
com grandes dificuldades
00:21
seem to draw strength from them,
4
9096
3052
parecem tirar delas sua força,
00:24
and I've heard the popular wisdom
5
12148
1890
e já ouvi a sabedoria popular
00:26
that that has to do with finding meaning.
6
14038
2329
que isso tem a ver
com encontrar um significado.
00:28
And for a long time,
7
16367
1655
E por muito tempo,
00:30
I thought the meaning was out there,
8
18022
2509
eu achei que o significado estava lá,
00:32
some great truth waiting to be found.
9
20531
3013
Uma grande verdade esperando
para ser encontrada.
00:35
But over time, I've come to feel
10
23544
2559
Mas com o tempo, eu cheguei a sentir
00:38
that the truth is irrelevant.
11
26103
2024
que a verdade é irrelevante.
00:40
We call it finding meaning,
12
28127
2589
Nós falamos de encontrar significado,
00:42
but we might better call it forging meaning.
13
30716
4121
mas seria melhor falar sobre
forjar significado.
00:47
My last book was about how families

Meu último livro
foi sobre como as famílias
00:49
manage to deal with various kinds of challenging
15
36913

lidam com diferentes tipos de filhos
00:52
or unusual offspring,
16
39837
2075
desafiantes ou incomuns,
00:54
and one of the mothers I interviewed,

e uma das mães que eu entrevistei,
00:56
who had two children with
multiple severe disabilities,
18

que tinha dois filhos
com várias deficiências severas,
00:59
said to me, "People always give us

disse para mim: "As pessoas sempre
01:02
these little sayings like,

nos dizem coisas como,
01:03
'God doesn't give you any
more than you can handle,'
21

'Deus não nos dá mais
do que podemos suportar',
01:07
but children like ours

01:09

23

01:13
They're a gift because that's what we have chosen."
24

4936
São dádivas porque
foi isso que escolhemos."
01:18
We make those choices all our lives.
25
66046
4724
Nós fazemos essas escolhas a vida toda.
01:22
When I was in second grade,
26
70770
2267
Quando eu estava na segunda série,
01:25
Bobby Finkel had a birthday party
27
73037
2759
Bobby Finkel deu uma festa de aniversário
01:27
and invited everyone in our class but me.
28
75796
4525
e convidou todos na turma menos eu.
01:32
My mother assumed there
had been some sort of error,
29
80321
2216
Minha mãe presumiu que havia algum engano.
01:34
and she called Mrs. Finkel,
30
82537
1897
e ligou para a Sra. Finkel,
01:36
who said that Bobby didn't like me
31
84434
2339
que disse que Bobby não gostava de mim
01:38
and didn't want me at his party.
32
86773
3147
e não queria que eu fosse à sua festa.
01:42
And that day, my mom took me to the zoo
33
89920
2927
E naquele dia, minha mãe
me levou ao zoológico
01:45
and out for a hot fudge sundae.
34
92847
3020
e nós tomamos um sundae
com calda de chocolate.
01:48
When I was in seventh grade,
35
95867
1858
Quando eu estava na sétima série,
01:49
one of the kids on my school bus
36
97725
2325
uma das crianças no ônibus escolar
01:52
nicknamed me "Percy"
37
100050
1933
me deu o apelido "Percy"
01:54
as a shorthand for my demeanor,
38
101983
2693
por causa do meu comportamento,
01:56
and sometimes, he and his cohort
39
104676
3099
e às vezes, ele e sua turma
01:59
would chant that provocation
40
107775
2074
cantavam a provocação
02:02
the entire school bus ride,
41
109849
1869
durante todo o trajeto do ônibus,
02:03
45 minutes up, 45 minutes back,
42
111718
3817
45 minutos na ida, 45 minutos na volta,
02:07
"Percy! Percy! Percy! Percy!"
43
115535
4533
"Percy! Percy! Percy! Percy!"
02:12
When I was in eighth grade,
44
120068
1980
Quando eu estava na oitava série,
02:14
our science teacher told us
45
122048
2647
nossa professora de Ciências nos disse
02:16
that all male homosexuals
46
124695
1649
que todos os homens homossexuais
02:18
develop fecal incontinence
47
126344
2228
desenvolvem incontinência fecal
02:20
because of the trauma to their anal sphincter.
48
128572
4407
por causa do trauma em seu esfíncter anal.
02:25
And I graduated high school
49
132979
1789
E eu me formei no colégio
02:26
without ever going to the cafeteria,
50
134768
2821
sem nunca ter ido à cantina,
02:29
where I would have sat with the girls
51
137589
1719
onde eu teria me sentado com as meninas
02:31
and been laughed at for doing so,
52
139308
2239
e tirariam sarro de mim por isso,
02:33
or sat with the boys
53
141547
1688
ou me teria me sentado com os meninos
02:35
and been laughed at for being a boy
54
143235
1635
e tirariam sarro de mim por ser um menino
02:37
who should be sitting with the girls.
55
144870
2815
que deveria sentar com as meninas.
02:39
I survived that childhood through a mix
56
147685
2873
Eu sobrevivi esta infância por uma mistura
02:42
of avoidance and endurance.
57
150558
2539
de evasão e perseverança.
02:45
What I didn't know then,
58
153097
2118
O que eu não sabia na época,
02:47
and do know now,
59
155215
1621
e agora sei,
02:49
is that avoidance and endurance
60
156836
2387
é que evasão e perseverança
02:51
can be the entryway to forging meaning.
61
159223
4687
podem ser o início de forjar significado.
02:56
After you've forged meaning,
62
163910
2274
Depois de forjar significado,
02:58
you need to incorporate that meaning
63
166184
2214
você precisa incorporá-lo
03:00
into a new identity.
64
168398
2114
a uma nova identidade.
03:02
You need to take the traumas and make them part
65
170512
3368
Você precisa pegar os traumas
e fazê-los parte
03:06
of who you've come to be,
66
173880
2220
do que você se tornou,
03:08
and you need to fold the worst events of your life
67
176100
2745
e precisa transformar
os piores eventos da sua vida
03:11
into a narrative of triumph,
68
178845
2193
em uma narrativa de triunfo,
03:13
evincing a better self
69
181038
1884
evidenciando um eu melhor
03:15
in response to things that hurt.
70
182922
3549
em resposta às coisas que machucam.
Uma das outras mães que entrevistei
03:18
One of the other mothers I interviewed
71
186471
1745
03:20
when I was working on my book
72
188216
2152
enquanto eu trabalhava no meu livro
03:22
had been raped as an adolescent,
73
190368
2502
tinha sido estuprada na adolescência,
03:25
and had a child following that rape,
74
192870
2983
e teve um filho em consequência deste estupro,
03:28
which had thrown away her career plans
75
195853
2947
que destruiu seus planos de carreira
03:31
and damaged all of her emotional relationships.
76
198800
4050
e danificou todos os seus
relacionamentos emocionais.
03:35
But when I met her, she was 50,
77
202850
3210
Mas quando eu a conheci,
ela tinha 50 anos,
03:38
and I said to her,
78
206060
1216
e eu lhe disse:
03:39
"Do you often think about the man who raped you?"
79
207276
2656
"Você pensa muito
no homem que te estuprou?"
03:42
And she said, "I used to think about him with anger,
80
209932
4459
E ela disse: "Eu costumava
pensar nele com raiva,
03:46
but now only with pity."
81
214391
2232
mas agora somente com pena."
03:48
And I thought she meant pity because he was
82
216623
2261
E eu pensei que ela dizia
pena porque ele era
03:51
so unevolved as to have done this terrible thing.
83
218884
3692
tão primitivo que
havia feito essa coisa terrível.
03:54
And I said, "Pity?"
84
222576
1559
E eu disse: "Pena?"
03:56
And she said, "Yes,
85
224135
1575
E ela disse: "Sim,
03:57
because he has a beautiful daughter
86
225710
2628
porque ele tem uma linda filha
04:00
and two beautiful grandchildren
87
228338
2235
e dois lindos netos
04:02
and he doesn't know that, and I do.
88
230573
3778
e sequer sabe disso, e eu sei.
04:06
So as it turns out, I'm the lucky one."
89
234351
5920
Então, como se vê, eu que tenho sorte."
04:12
Some of our struggles are things we're born to:
90
240271
3312
Algumas de nossas lutas nos são natas:
04:15
our gender, our sexuality, our race, our disability.
91
243583
5505
nosso gênero, nossa sexualidade,
nossa raça, nossa deficiência.
04:21
And some are things that happen to us:
92
249088
2233
E algumas são coisas que nos acontecem:
04:23
being a political prisoner, being a rape victim,
93
251321
3856
ser prisioneiro político,
ser vítima de estupro,
04:27
being a Katrina survivor.
94
255177
2193
ser sobrevivente do Katrina.
04:29
Identity involves entering a community
95
257370
3285
Identidade envolve entrar numa comunidade
04:32
to draw strength from that community,
96
260655
2381
para buscar força dessa comunidade,
04:35
and to give strength there too.
97
263036
2405
e também para oferecer força a ela.
04:37
It involves substituting "and" for "but" --
98
265441
4485
Envolve substituir "e" por "mas";
04:42
not "I am here but I have cancer,"
99
269926
4349
não "Estou aqui, mas tenho câncer",
04:46
but rather, "I have cancer and I am here."
100
274275
5289
mas sim: "Tenho câncer e estou aqui".
04:51
When we're ashamed,
101
279564
1804
Quando temos vergonha,
04:53
we can't tell our stories,
102
281368
1977
não conseguimos contar nossas histórias,
04:55
and stories are the foundation of identity.
103
283345
4829
e histórias são o alicerce da identidade.
05:00
Forge meaning, build identity,
104
288174
3767
Forje significado, construa identidade,
05:04
forge meaning and build identity.
105
291941
3739
"Forje significado e construa identidade."
05:07
That became my mantra.
106
295680
2301
Tornou-se meu mantra.
05:10
Forging meaning is about changing yourself.
107
297981
3720
Forjar significado é sobre
mudar a si mesmo.
05:13
Building identity is about changing the world.
108
301701
3446
Construir identidade é sobre
mudar o mundo.
05:17
All of us with stigmatized identities
109
305147
2640
Todos nós com identidades estigmatizadas
05:19
face this question daily:
110
307787
1943
enfrentamos essa questão diariamente:
05:21
how much to accommodate society
111
309730
2352
quanto acomodamos a sociedade
05:24
by constraining ourselves,
112
312082
2191
reprimindo-nos,
05:26
and how much to break the limits
113
314273
2826
e quanto rompemos os limites
05:29
of what constitutes a valid life?
114
317099
2767
do que constitui uma vida válida?
05:32
Forging meaning and building identity
115
319866
3514
Forjar significado e construir identidade
05:35
does not make what was wrong right.
116
323380
2767
não faz o certo do errado.
05:38
It only makes what was wrong precious.
117
326147
4674
Só torna precioso o que era errado.

enquanto estávamos na prisão".
07:08
And I understood her to be saying
152
416245
2159
E eu entendi que ela estava dizendo
07:10
that concessions confer only a little humanity,
153
418404
3456
que concessões conferem apenas
um pouco de humanidade,
07:14
where full humanity is due,
154
421860
2258
onde humanidade completa é necessária,
07:16
that crumbs are not the same
155
424118
2248
que migalhas não são a mesma coisa
07:18
as a place at the table,
156
426366
2036
que um lugar à mesa,
07:20
which is to say you can forge meaning
157
428402
2596
então você pode forjar significado
07:23
and build identity and still be mad as hell.
158
430998
6440
e construir identidade
e mesmo assim estar furioso.
07:29
I've never been raped,
159
437438
1664
Eu nunca fui estuprado,
07:31
and I've never been in anything
remotely approaching
160
439102
3058
e nunca estive em nada
nem remotamente parecido
07:34
a Burmese prison,
161
442160
1727
com uma prisão birmanesa,
07:36
but as a gay American,
162
443887
1884
mas como um americano gay,
07:37
I've experienced prejudice and even hatred,
163
445771
4034
eu já sofri preconceito e até mesmo ódio,
07:42
and I've forged meaning and I've built identity,
164
449805
4542
e eu forjei significado
e construí identidade,
07:46
which is a move I learned from people
165
454347
2349
que é uma atitude que aprendi de pessoas
07:48
who had experienced far worse privation
166
456696
2522
que sofreram privação muito pior
07:51
than I've ever known.
167
459218
2564
do que eu jamais passei.
07:53
In my own adolescence,
168
461782
1667
Em minha adolescência,
07:55
I went to extreme lengths to try to be straight.
169
463449
3492
fiz tentativas extremas
para tentar ser hétero.
07:59
I enrolled myself in something called
170
466941
1949
Eu me inscrevi em algo chamado
08:01
sexual surrogacy therapy,
171
468890
2161
terapia de assistência sexual,
08:03
in which people I was encouraged to call doctors
172
471051
3817
onde pessoas as quais
eu deveria chamar de médicos
08:07
prescribed what I was encouraged to call exercises
173
474868
3839
prescreviam o que
eu deveria chamar de exercícios
08:10
with women I was encouraged to call surrogates,
174
478707
3752
com mulheres que eu deveria
chamar de assistentes,
08:14
who were not exactly prostitutes
175
482459
2491
que não eram exatamente prostitutas
08:17
but who were also not exactly anything else.
176
484950
2925
mas que também não eram
exatamente nada diferente.
08:20
(Laughter)
177
487875
4483
(Risos)
08:24
My particular favorite
178
492358
1717
A minha favorita
08:26
was a blonde woman from the Deep South
179
494075
2305
era uma loira do sul norte-americano
08:28
who eventually admitted to me
180
496380
1861
que um dia confessou para mim
08:30
that she was really a necrophiliac
181
498241
2342
que ela era mesmo uma necrófila
08:32
and had taken this job after she got in trouble
182
500583
2802
e havia começado esse emprego
depois de se encrencar
08:35
down at the morgue.
183
503385
1945
no necrotério.
08:37
(Laughter)
184
505330
4156
(Risos)
08:43
These experiences eventually allowed me to have
185
511476
2858
Essas experiências enfim me permitiram ter
08:46
some happy physical relationships with women,
186
514334
2789
algumas relações físicas
felizes com mulheres,
08:49
for which I'm grateful,
187
517123
1518
pelas quais sou grato,
08:50
but I was at war with myself,
188
518641
2724
mas eu estava em guerra comigo mesmo,
08:53
and I dug terrible wounds into my own psyche.
189
521365
4834
e causei ferimentos terríveis
em minha própria psique.
08:58
We don't seek the painful experiences
190
526199
3225
Nós não buscamos as experiência dolorosas
09:01
that hew our identities,
191
529424
2676
que tolham nossas identidades,
09:04
but we seek our identities
192
532100
1810
mas buscamos nossas identidades
09:06
in the wake of painful experiences.
193
533910
3433
ao final de experiências dolorosas.
09:09
We cannot bear a pointless torment,
194
537343
2886
Não podemos suportar
um tormento sem sentido,
09:12
but we can endure great pain
195
540229
2500
mas conseguimos suportar uma enorme dor
09:14
if we believe that it's purposeful.
196
542729
3175
se acreditarmos que ela tem um propósito.
09:18
Ease makes less of an impression on us
197
545904
2256
A facilidade nos causa
uma menor impressão
09:20
than struggle.
198
548160
1483
do que a luta.
09:21
We could have been ourselves without our delights,
199
549643
2457
Poderíamos ser nós mesmos
sem nossas alegrias,
09:24
but not without the misfortunes
200
552100
2276
mas não sem nossos infortúnios
09:26
that drive our search for meaning.
201
554376
2831
que guiam nossa busca por significado.
09:29
"Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities,"
202
557207
3783
"Por isso sinto prazer nas injúrias"
disse São Paulo
na segunda epístola aos Coríntios
09:33
St. Paul wrote in Second Corinthians,
203
560990
2284
09:35
"for when I am weak, then I am strong."
204
563274
4516
"porqque quando estou fraco,
então sou forte."
09:39
In 1988, I went to Moscow
205
567790
2945
Em 1988, eu fui a Moscou
09:42
to interview artists of the Soviet underground,
206
570735
3115
para entrevistar
artistas do underground soviético,
09:46
and I expected their work to be
207
573850
1873
e eu esperava que o trabalho deles fosse
09:47
dissident and political.
208
575723
2454
dissidente e político.
09:50
But the radicalism in their work actually lay
209
578177
3058
Mas o radicalismo
em seu trabalho na verdade estava
09:53
in reinserting humanity into a society
210
581235
2925
em reinserir humanidade em uma sociedade
09:56
that was annihilating humanity itself,
211
584160
2183
que estava aniquilando
a própria humanidade,
09:58
as, in some senses, Russian society
212
586343
2788
como, de certo modo, a sociedade russa
10:01
is now doing again.
213
589131
1867
está fazendo agora de novo.
10:03
One of the artists I met said to me,
214
590998
2587
Uma dos artistas que encontrei me disse:
10:05
"We were in training to be not artists but angels."
215
593585
4411
"Estávamos treinando para ser
não artistas, mas anjos."
10:10
In 1991, I went back to see the artists
216
597996
3155
Em 1991, eu voltei para ver os artistas
sobre os quais eu tinha escrito,
10:13
I'd been writing about,
217
601151
1478
10:14
and I was with them during the putsch
218
602629
2149
e eu estava com eles durante o golpe
10:16
that ended the Soviet Union,
219
604778
1762
que acabou com a União Soviética,
10:18
and they were among the chief organizers
220
606540
2289
e eles estavam entre
os principais organizadores
10:21
of the resistance to that putsch.
221
608829
3026
da resistência àquele golpe.
10:24
And on the third day of the putsch,
222
611855
3419
E no terceiro dia do golpe,
10:27
one of them suggested we walk up to Smolenskaya.
223
615274
3039
um deles sugeriu
que andássemos até praça Smolenskaya.
10:30
And we went there,
224
618313
1282
E lá nós fomos,
10:31
and we arranged ourselves in
front of one of the barricades,
225
619595
3259
e colocamo-nos à frente
de uma das barricadas,
10:35
and a little while later,
226
622854
1758
e um pouco depois,
10:36
a column of tanks rolled up,
227
624612
2261
uma fileira de tanques surgiu,
10:39
and the soldier on the front tank said,
228
626873
2037
e o soldado no tanque à frente disse:
10:41
"We have unconditional orders
229
628910
2204
"Temos ordens incondicionais
10:43
to destroy this barricade.
230
631114
1606
de destruir essa barricada.
10:44
If you get out of the way,
231
632720
1655
Se saírem do caminho,
10:46
we don't need to hurt you,
232
634375
1565
não temos que machucá-los,
10:48
but if you won't move, we'll have no choice
233
635940
1878
mas se não saírem, não teremos escolha
10:50
but to run you down."
234
637818
1713
a não ser atropelá-los."
E os artistas que estavam comigo disseram,
10:51
And the artists I was with said,
235
639531
1852
10:53
"Give us just a minute.
236
641383
1407
"Dê-nos só um minuto.
10:54
Give us just a minute to tell you why we're here."
237
642790
4348
Dê-nos só um minuto para lhe dizer
por que estamos aqui."
10:59
And the soldier folded his arms,
238
647138
2056
E o soldado cruzou os braços,
11:01
and the artist launched into a
Jeffersonian panegyric to democracy
239
649194
4600
e o artista começou um panegírico
jeffersoniano à democracia
11:05
such as those of us who live
240
653794
1858
de tamanha qualidade que
aqueles entre nós que vivem
11:07
in a Jeffersonian democracy
241
655652
1921
em uma democracia jeffersoniana
11:09
would be hard-pressed to present.
242
657573
3295
teriam dificuldade em apresentar.
11:13
And they went on and on,
243
660868
1756
E eles insistiram longamente,
11:14
and the soldier watched,
244
662624
2003
e o soldado assistia,
11:16
and then he sat there for a full minute
245
664627
1729
e então ficou sentado
lá por um minuto inteiro
11:18
after they were finished
246
666356
1504
depois de eles terem terminado
11:20
and looked at us so bedraggled in the rain,
247
667860
2785
e olhou-nos cheio de lama da chuva,
11:22
and said, "What you have said is true,
248
670645
3677
e disse: "O que você disse é verdade,
11:26
and we must bow to the will of the people.
249
674322
3616
e temos que nos curvar ao desejo do povo.
11:30
If you'll clear enough space for us to turn around,
250
677938
2471
se nos derem espaço para nos virarmos,
11:32
we'll go back the way we came."
251
680409
2454
vamos voltar por onde viemos."
11:35
And that's what they did.
252
682863
2146
E foi isso que fizeram.
11:37
Sometimes, forging meaning
253
685009
2218
Às vezes, forjar significado
11:39
can give you the vocabulary you need
254
687227
2620
pode fornecer o vocabulário necessário
11:42
to fight for your ultimate freedom.
255
689847
3258
para lutar pela sua liberdade suprema.
11:45
Russia awakened me to the lemonade notion
256
693105
3155
A Rússia me despertou
para a idéia "limonada"
11:48
that oppression breeds the power to oppose it,
257
696260
2554
de que a opressão
cultiva o poder para opô-la,
11:51
and I gradually understood that as the cornerstone
258
698814
3426
e eu gradualmente a entendi
como a pedra fundamental
11:54
of identity.
259
702240
1534
da identidade.
11:55
It took identity to rescue me from sadness.
260
703774
4685
Foi necessária identidade
para me resgatar da tristeza.
12:00
The gay rights movement posits a world
261
708459
2116
O movimento dos direitos gays
propõe um mundo
12:02
in which my aberrances are a victory.
262
710575
2851
no qual minhas aberrações são vitórias.
12:05
Identity politics always works on two fronts:
263
713426
3628
A política da identidade
sempre trabalha em duas frentes:
12:09
to give pride to people who have a given condition
264
717054
3055
dar orgulho às pessoas
com uma certa condição
12:12
or characteristic,
265
720109
1457
ou característica,
12:13
and to cause the outside world
266
721566
1676
e fazer com que o mundo externo
12:15
to treat such people more gently and more kindly.
267
723242
3528
trate essas pessoas mais gentilmente.
12:18
Those are two totally separate enterprises,
268
726770
3518
Essas são duas empreitadas diferentes,
12:22
but progress in each sphere
269
730288
1825
mas o progresso em cada esfera
12:24
reverberates in the other.
270
732113
2359
ecoa na outra.
12:26
Identity politics can be narcissistic.
271
734472
3749
A política da identidade
pode ser narcisista.
12:30
People extol a difference only because it's theirs.
272
738221
3328
As pessoas exaltam uma diferença
só porque é delas.
12:33
People narrow the world and function
273
741549
2399
As pessoas limitam o mundo e agem
12:36
in discrete groups without empathy for one another.
274
743948
3051
em grupos discretos sem empatia mútua.
12:39
But properly understood
275
746999
2485
Mas bem compreendida
12:41
and wisely practiced,
276
749484
1921
e sabiamente praticada,
12:43
identity politics should expand
277
751405
1991
a política da identidade deve expandir
12:45
our idea of what it is to be human.
278
753396
2527
nossa ideia do que é ser humano.
12:48
Identity itself
279
755923
1718
A identidade em si
12:49
should be not a smug label
280
757641
2549
não deveria ser um rótulo presunçoso
12:52
or a gold medal
281
760190
2084
ou uma medalha de ouro
12:54
but a revolution.
282
762274
2473
mas uma revolução.
12:56
I would have had an easier life if I were straight,
283
764747
3566
Eu teria tido uma vida
mais fácil se fosse hétero,
13:00
but I would not be me,
284
768313
1797
mas eu não seria eu mesmo,
13:02
and I now like being myself better
285
770110
2665
e agora gosto mais de ser eu mesmo
13:04
than the idea of being someone else,
286
772775
2053
do que da ideia de ser outra pessoa,
13:07
someone who, to be honest,
287
774828
1648
alguém que, honestamente,
13:08
I have neither the option of being
288
776476
2084
não tenho nem a opção de ser
13:10
nor the ability fully to imagine.
289
778560
2477
nem a habilidade
de imaginar completamente.
13:13
But if you banish the dragons,
290
781037
2152
Mas se banirmos os dragões,
13:15
you banish the heroes,
291
783189
2565
banimos os heróis,
13:17
and we become attached
292
785754
1541
e ficamos presos
13:19
to the heroic strain in our own lives.
293
787295
3128
à tensão heroica em nossas vidas.
13:22
I've sometimes wondered
294
790423
1281
Às vezes eu imagino
13:23
whether I could have ceased
to hate that part of myself
295
791704
2782
se eu poderia ter parado
de odiar aquela parte de mim mesmo
13:26
without gay pride's technicolor fiesta,
296
794486
2581
sem essa festa
do orgulho gay em technicolor
13:29
of which this speech is one manifestation.
297
797067
4501
da qual esse discurso é uma manifestação.
13:33
I used to think I would know myself to be mature
298
801568
2897
Eu constumava achar
que saberia que estava maduro
13:36
when I could simply be gay without emphasis,
299
804465
2854
quando pudesse simplesmente
ser gay sem ênfase,
13:39
but the self-loathing of that period left a void,
300
807319
3909
mas a autodepreciação
daquela época deixou um vazio,
13:43
and celebration needs to fill and overflow it,
301
811228
3735
e a celebração precisa
preenchê-lo e transbordá-lo,
13:47
and even if I repay my private debt of melancholy,
302
814963
3694
e mesmo se eu quitar
meu débito particular de melancolia,
13:50
there's still an outer world of homophobia
303
818657
2756
ainda há um mundo externo de homofobia
13:53
that it will take decades to address.
304
821413
2889
que vai levar décadas para ser resolvido.
13:56
Someday, being gay will be a simple fact,
305
824302
3315
Um dia, ser gay será um simples fato,
13:59
free of party hats and blame,
306
827617
2849
livre de chapéus de festa e culpa,
14:02
but not yet.
307
830466
1518
mas ainda não.
14:04
A friend of mine who thought gay pride
308
831984
2749
Um amigo que achava que o orgulho gay
14:06
was getting very carried away with itself,
309
834733
1914
estava se exaltando demais,
sugeriu uma vez que organizássemos
14:08
once suggested that we organize
310
836647
1564
14:10
Gay Humility Week.
311
838211
2022
a Semana da Humildade Gay
14:12
(Laughter) (Applause)
312

É uma ótima ideia,

but its time has not yet come.

And neutrality, which seems to lie
316
853252
2199
E a neutralidade que parece estar
14:27
halfway between despair and celebration,
317
855451
2754
entre o desespero e a celebração,
14:30
is actually the endgame.
318
858205
3186
é, na verdade, a disputa final.

who had been caught in carnal acts,

que foram pegos em atos carnais,
15:03
were sentenced to 7,000 lashes each,
331

15:08

15:11
So who can forge meaning
333
899339
1871
Então quem pode forjar significado
15:13
and build identity?
334
901210
2780
e construir identidade?
15:16
Gay rights are not primarily marriage rights,
335
903990
3327
Direitos gays não são principalmente
direitos matrimoniais,
15:19
and for the millions who live in unaccepting places
336

2936
e para os milhões que vivem
em lugares inaceitáveis
15:22
with no resources,
337
910253
2177
sem qualquer recurso,
15:24
dignity remains elusive.
338
912430
2480
a dignidade continua sendo fugidia.
15:27
I am lucky to have forged meaning
339
914910
3012
Eu tenho sorte por ter forjado significado
15:30
and built identity,
340
917922
2066
e construído identidade,
15:32
but that's still a rare privilege,
341
919988
2297
Mas isso ainda é um privilégio raro,
15:34
and gay people deserve more collectively
342
922285
2829
e os homossexuais merecem mais, coletivamente,
15:37
than the crumbs of justice.
343
925114
3436
do que as migalhas da justiça.
15:40
And yet, every step forward
344
928550
3051
E ainda assim, cada passo à frente
15:43
is so sweet.
345
931601
2066
é tão doce.
15:45
In 2007, six years after we met,

Em 2007, seis anos depois
de nos conhecermos,
15:49

2057
meu parceiro e eu decidimos
15:51
to get married.
348
939378
1734
nos casar.
15:53
Meeting John had been the discovery
349
941112
2182
Conhecer John havia sido a descoberta
15:55
of great happiness
350
943294
1856
de grande felicidade
15:57
and also the elimination of great unhappiness,
351
945150
3100
e também a eliminação
de grande infelicidade,
16:00
and sometimes, I was so occupied
352
948250
2614
e às vezes eu estava tão focado
16:03
with the disappearance of all that pain
353
950864
2501
no desaparecimento de toda aquela dor
16:05
that I forgot about the joy,
354
953365
2352
que eu esquecia da alegria,
16:07
which was at first the less
remarkable part of it to me.
355
955717
3747
que no início era a parte
menos surpreendente para mim.
16:11
Marrying was a way to declare our love
356
959464
2701
O casamento era uma maneira
de declarar nosso amor
16:14
as more a presence than an absence.
357
962165
3986
mais como uma presença
do que como uma ausência.
16:18
Marriage soon led us to children,
358
966151
2452
O casamento logo nos levou aos filhos,
e isso significou novos significados
16:20
and that meant new meanings
359
968603
1607
16:22
and new identities, ours and theirs.
360
970210
4252
e novas identidades, nossas e deles.
16:26
I want my children to be happy,
361
974462
2927
Eu quero que meus filhos sejam felizes,
16:29
and I love them most achingly when they are sad.
362
977389
3781
e amo-os mais dolorosamente
quando estão tristes.
16:33
As a gay father, I can teach them
363
981170
2680
Como um pai gay, posso ensiná-los
16:36
to own what is wrong in their lives,
364
983850
2677
a dominar o que estiver errado
em suas vidas,
16:38
but I believe that if I succeed
365
986527
1793
mas acredito que se eu tiver sucesso
16:40
in sheltering them from adversity,
366
988320
2320
em protegê-los das adversidades,
16:42
I will have failed as a parent.
367
990640
2890
eu terei fracassado como pai.
16:45
A Buddhist scholar I know once explained to me
368
993530
3068
Um sábio budista uma vez me explicou
16:48
that Westerners mistakenly think
369
996598
1969
que os ocidentais acham erroneamente
16:50
that nirvana is what arrives
370
998567
2355
que o nirvana é o que se alcança
16:53
when all your woe is behind you
371
1000922
2743
quando todas as suas angústias
ficam para trás
16:55
and you have only bliss to look forward to.
372
1003665
3239
e você só tem alegrias
a esperar pela frente.
16:59
But he said that would not be nirvana,
373
1006904
2165
Mas ele disse que isso
não seria o nirvana,
17:01
because your bliss in the present
374
1009069
1510
porque sua felicidade no presente
17:02
would always be shadowed by the joy from the past.
375
1010579
3999
sempre seria obscurecida
pela alegria do passado.
17:06
Nirvana, he said, is what you arrive at
376
1014578
2830
O nirvana, disse ele, é o que se alcança
17:09
when you have only bliss to look forward to
377
1017408
2382
quando só há alegrias
a esperar pela frente
17:11
and find in what looked like sorrows
378
1019790
2483
e encontra-se naquilo que parecia aflição
17:14
the seedlings of your joy.
379
1022273
2853
a semente da alegria.
17:17
And I sometimes wonder
380
1025126
1711
E, às vezes, eu me pergunto
17:19
whether I could have found such fulfillment
381
1026837
2393
se eu poderia
ter encontrado tal realização
17:21
in marriage and children
382
1029230
1462
no casamento e nos filhos
17:22
if they'd come more readily,
383
1030692
2053
se tivessem vindo mais prontamente,
17:24
if I'd been straight in my youth or were young now,
384
1032745
4025
se eu tivesse sido hétero na juventude
ou fosse jovem agora,
17:28
in either of which cases this might be easier.
385
1036770
3422
se em algum desses casos
teria sido mais fácil.
17:32
Perhaps I could.
386
1040192
1579
Talvez eu pudesse.
17:33
Perhaps all the complex imagining I've done
387
1041771
2337
Talvez todo o pensamento
complexo que eu tive
17:36
could have been applied to other topics.
388
1044108
2133
poderia ter sido aplicado
a outros tópicos.
17:38
But if seeking meaning
389
1046241
1640
Mas se buscar significado
é mais importante
do que encontrar significado,
17:40
matters more than finding meaning,
390
1047881
1857
17:41
the question is not whether I'd be happier
391
1049738
3363
a questão não é se eu seria mais feliz
17:45
for having been bullied,
392
1053101
1546
por ter sofrido bullying,
17:46
but whether assigning meaning
393
1054647
1672
mas sim se atribuir significado
17:48
to those experiences
394
1056319
1735
a essas experiências
17:50
has made me a better father.
395
1058054
2416
me tornou um pai melhor.
17:52
I tend to find the ecstasy hidden in ordinary joys,
396
1060470
4008
Eu costumo encontrar
o êxtase escondido nas alegrias comuns
17:56
because I did not expect those joys
397
1064478
1959
porque eu não esperava que essas alegrias
17:58
to be ordinary to me.
398
1066437
2528
fossem comuns para mim.
Eu conheço vários heterossexuais que têm
18:01
I know many heterosexuals who have
399
1068965
1817
18:02
equally happy marriages and families,
400
1070782
2266
casamentos e famílias igualmente felizes,
18:05
but gay marriage is so breathtakingly fresh,
401
1073048
2861
mas o casamento gay é tão
impressionantemente recente,
18:08
and gay families so exhilaratingly new,
402
1075909
3304
e famílias gays são tão
excitantemente novas
18:11
and I found meaning in that surprise.
403
1079213
4259
e eu encontrei significado nessa surpresa.
18:15
In October, it was my 50th birthday,
404
1083472
3438
Em outubro, eu completei 50 anos,
18:19
and my family organized a party for me,
405
1086910
3218
e minha família organizou
uma festa para mim,
18:22
and in the middle of it,
406
1090128
1489
e no meio da festa,
18:23
my son said to my husband
407
1091617
1417
meu filho disse a meu marido
18:25
that he wanted to make a speech,
408
1093034
1666
que ele queria dar um discurso,
18:26
and John said,
409
1094700
994
e John disse:
18:27
"George, you can't make a speech. You're four."
410
1095694
4622
"George, você não pode dar um discurso,
você tem quatro anos."
18:32
(Laughter)
411
1100316
1514
(Risos)
18:34
"Only Grandpa and Uncle David and I
412
1101830
2336
"Só o vovô, o tio David e eu
18:36
are going to make speeches tonight."
413
1104166
2049
vamos dar um discurso hoje."
18:38
But George insisted and insisted,
414
1106215
2905
Mas George insistiu e insistiu,
18:41
and finally, John took him up to the microphone,
415
1109120
3003
e finalmente John levou-o até o microfone,
18:44
and George said very loudly,
416
1112123
3056
e George disse em alto e bom som:
18:47
"Ladies and gentlemen,
417
1115179
2444
"Senhoras e senhores,
18:49
may I have your attention please."
418
1117623
2582
um minuto da sua atenção, por favor."
18:52
And everyone turned around, startled.
419
1120205
2715
E todos se viraram, supresos.
18:55
And George said,
420
1122920
2107
E George disse:
18:57
"I'm glad it's Daddy's birthday.
421
1125027
2331
"Estou feliz por ser aniversário do papai.
18:59
I'm glad we all get cake.
422
1127358
3441
Estou feliz porque vamos ter bolo.
19:02
And daddy, if you were little,
423
1130799
3158
E papai, se você fosse pequeno,
19:06
I'd be your friend."
424
1133957
3267
Eu seria seu amigo."
19:09
And I thought — Thank you.
425
1137770
2831
E eu pensei: Obrigado.
19:12
I thought that I was indebted
426
1140601
2299
Eu achei que tinha uma dívida
19:15
even to Bobby Finkel,
427
1142900
1795
até mesmo com Bobby Finkel,
19:16
because all those earlier experiences
428
1144695
2737
porque todas aquelas
experiências do passado
19:19
were what had propelled me to this moment,
429
1147432
2368
foram o que me impulsionaram até este momento,
19:22
and I was finally unconditionally grateful
430
1149800
2532
e finalmente eu estava
incondicionalmente agradecido
19:24
for a life I'd once have done anything to change.
