ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Malte Spitz - Politician, data activist
Malte Spitz asked his cell phone carrier what it knew about him -- and mapped what he found out.

Why you should listen

German Green Party politician Malte Spitz is an expert on digital change and privacy.

In 2009, Spitz went to court to obtain the information that his cell phone operator, Deutsche Telekom, gathered (and kept) about his activity. The results astonished him. Over the course of six months, they had tracked his geographical location and what he was doing with his phone more than 35,000 times. Working with the German online news site Zeit Online, an infographic was created that shows Spitz's activity across an interactive timeline, combined DT's geolocation data with information relating to his life as a politician, such as Twitter feeds, blog entries and website. By pushing the play button, viewers can set off on a detail-rich trip through six months of his life. And more, because he keeps asking the telecom company for his most recent data.

Spitz is the author of the book What Are You Doing with My Data? and has contributed to international publications, such as the New York Times and The Guardian. Spitz lives with his wife and two kids in Berlin.

03:26
have to store商店 all this information信息 about us.
50
191092
3449
03:30
They were lawyers律师, journalists记者, priests牧师,
51
194541
2683
03:33
they all said: "We don't want this."
52
197224
3156
03:36
And here you can see, like 10 thousands数千 of people
53
200380
3067
03:39
went out on the streets街道 of Berlin柏林 and said,
54

03:42
"Freedom自由, not fear恐惧."
55
206103
3207
“要自由,不要恐惧”
03:45
And some even said, this would be Stasi
56
209310
4449
03:49
Stasi斯塔西 was the secret秘密 police警察 in East Germany德国.
57
213759
6037
Stasi
03:55
And I also ask myself, does it really work?
58
219796
4481
04:00
Can they really store商店 all this information信息 about us?
59
224277
3432
04:03
Every一切 time I use my mobile移动 phone电话?
60
227709
3630
04:07
So I asked my phone电话 company公司, Deutsche德意志 Telekom电信,
61
231354
3756
04:11
which哪一个 was at that time the largest最大 phone电话 company公司 in Germany德国,
62
235110
3765
04:14
and I asked them, please,
63
238875
1396
04:16
send发送 me all the information信息 you have stored存储 about me.
64
240271
4356
04:20
And I asked them once一旦, and I asked them again,
65
244642
2159
04:22
and I got no real真实 answer回答. It was only blah胡说 blah胡说 answers答案.
66
246801
3176
04:25
But then I said, I want to have this information信息,
67
249977
3112
04:28
because this is my life you are protocolingprotocoling.
68
253089
4752
04:33
So I decided决定 to start开始 a lawsuit诉讼 against反对 them,
69
257841
3992
04:37
because I wanted to have this information信息.
70
261833
2960
04:40
But Deutsche德意志 Telekom电信 said, no,
71
264793
2000
04:42
we will not give you this information信息.
72
266793
2752
04:45
So at the end结束, I had a settlement沉降 with them.
73
269545
4217
04:49
I'll put down the lawsuit
74
273762
1359
04:51
and they will send发送 me all the information信息 I ask for.
75
275121
3208
04:54
Because in the mean time,
76
278329
1217
04:57
that the implementation履行 of this E.U. directive指示
78
281783
3817
05:01
into German德语 law was unconstitutional违宪.
79
285600
4419
05:05
So I got this ugly丑陋 brown棕色 envelope信封
80
290019
2118
05:08
with a C.D. inside.
81
292137
2568
05:10
And on the C.D., this was on.
82
294705
3080
05:13
Thirty-five三十五 thousand eight hundred thirty三十 lines线 of information信息.
83
297785
5361
05:19
At first I saw it, and I said, okay,
84
303146
2415
05:21
it's a huge巨大 file文件. Okay.
85
305561
3403
05:24
But then after a while I realized实现,
86
308964
2517
05:27
this is my life.
87
311481
2288
05:29
This is six months个月 of my life,
88
313769
1784
05:31
into this file文件.
89
315553
4298
05:35
So I was a little bit skeptical怀疑的, what should I do with it?
90
319851
4250
05:40
Because you can see where I am,
91
324101
3179
05:43
where I sleep睡觉 at night,
92
327280
2208
05:45
what I am doing.
93
329488
4704
05:50
But then I said, I want to go out with this information信息.
94
334192
4593
05:54
I want to make them public上市.
95
338785
1776
05:56
Because I want to show显示 the people what does data数据 retention保留 mean.
96
340561
4414
06:00
So together一起 with Zeit时代周报 Online线上 and Open打开 Data数据 City, I did this.
97
344975
5264
06:06
