ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Malte Spitz - Politician, data activist
Malte Spitz asked his cell phone carrier what it knew about him -- and mapped what he found out.

Why you should listen

German Green Party politician Malte Spitz is an expert on digital change and privacy.

In 2009, Spitz went to court to obtain the information that his cell phone operator, Deutsche Telekom, gathered (and kept) about his activity. The results astonished him. Over the course of six months, they had tracked his geographical location and what he was doing with his phone more than 35,000 times. Working with the German online news site Zeit Online, an infographic was created that shows Spitz's activity across an interactive timeline, combined DT's geolocation data with information relating to his life as a politician, such as Twitter feeds, blog entries and website. By pushing the play button, viewers can set off on a detail-rich trip through six months of his life. And more, because he keeps asking the telecom company for his most recent data.

Spitz is the author of the book What Are You Doing with My Data? and has contributed to international publications, such as the New York Times and The Guardian. Spitz lives with his wife and two kids in Berlin.

Who in the room has a mobile phone with you?

Ngrijeni lart.
01:45
Hold your phones up, hold your phones up!
24
89886
3129
Ngrijini telefonat tuaj!
01:48
Hold it up. An Android, a Blackberry, wow.
25
93015
2726
Një Android, një Blackberry.
01:51
That's a lot. Almost everybody today has a mobile phone.
26
95741
6393
Shumë. Sot thuajse çdokush
ka një celular.
01:58
But today I will talk about me and my mobile phone,
27
102134
4552
Por sot do të flas për veten
dhe për telefonin tim
02:02
and how it changed my life.
28
106686
3517
dhe se si ma ndryshoi jetën.
02:06
And I will talk about this.
29
110203
3580
Dhe do të flas për këto këtu.
02:09
These are 35,830 lines of information.
30
113783
5103
Këto janë 35,830 rreshta informacion.
02:14
Raw data.
31
118886
2763
Të dhëna të papërpunuara.
02:17
And why are these informations there?
32
121649
4626
Çne këtu këto informacione?
02:22
Because in the summer of 2006,
33
126275
2981
Sepse në verë të vitit 2006,
02:25
the E.U. Commission tabled a directive.
34
129256
3487
Komisioni i Bashkimit Evropian
hartoi një direktivë.
02:28
This directive [is] called Data Retention Directive.
35
132743
4665
Kjo direktivë quhet Direktiva
e Ruajtjes së të Dhënave.
02:33
This directive says that each phone company in Europe,
36
137408
4359
Në direktivë thuhet se
çdo kompani telefonike në Evropë,
02:37
each Internet service company all over Europe,
37
141767
4497
çdo kompani shërbimesh Interneti
anembanë Evropës,
02:42
has to store a wide range of information about the users.
38
146264
5279
duhet të ruajë një gamë të gjerë
informacioni rreth përdoruesve.
02:47
Who calls whom? Who sends whom an email?
39
151543
3161
Kë merr tjetri?
Kush dërgon një mesazh elektronik?
02:50
Who sends whom a text message?
40
154704
2144
Kush i dërgon një mesazh në tekst tjetrit?
02:52
And if you use your mobile phone, where you are.
41
156848
4335
Dhe ku gjendeni, nëse përdorni
celularin tuaj.
02:57
All this information is stored for at least six months,
42
161183
4452
Të gjitha këto informacione ruhen
të paktën nga gjashtë muaj
03:01
up to two years by your phone company
43
165635
3284
gjer në dy vjet nga kompania
juaj e telefonit,
03:04
or your Internet service provider.
44
168919
6072
ose nga mundësuesi juaj
i shërbimeve Interneti (ISP).
03:10
And all over Europe, people stood up and said,
45
174991
3660
Në tërë Evropën, njerëzit
u ngritën dhe thanë,
03:14
"We don't want this."
46
178651
2507
"Nuk e duam këtë".
03:17
They said, we don't want this data retention.
47
181158
3398
Ata thanë,
"Nuk e duam këtë ruajtje të dhënash.
03:20
We want self-determination in the digital age,
48
184556
3537
Duam vetëpërcaktim në epokën digjitale
03:23
and we don't want that phone companies and Internet companies
49
188093
2999
dhe s'duam që kompanitë telefonike
dhe të Internetit
03:26
have to store all this information about us.
50
191092
3449
të ruajnë të gjitha këto informacione
rreth nesh.
03:30
They were lawyers, journalists, priests,
51
194541
2683
Pati avokatë, gazetarë, priftërinj.
03:33
they all said: "We don't want this."
52
197224
3156
Të gjithë deklaruan,
"Nuk e duam këtë".
03:36
And here you can see, like 10 thousands of people
53
200380
3067
Dhe këtu mund të shihni,
ndoshta 10 mijë veta
03:39
went out on the streets of Berlin and said,
54
203447
2656
që dolën në rrugët e Berlinit
dhe thanë njëzëri,
03:42
"Freedom, not fear."
55
206103
3207
"Liri, jo frikë".
03:45
And some even said, this would be Stasi 2.0.
56
209310
4449
Madje disa thanë se kjo
do të bëhet Stasi 2.0.
03:49
Stasi was the secret police in East Germany.
57
213759
6037
Stasi qe policia sekrete
në Gjermaninë Lindore.
03:55
And I also ask myself, does it really work?
58
219796
4481
Gjithashtu e pyes veten,
funksionon vërtet?
04:00
Can they really store all this information about us?
59
224277
3432
Vërtet mund t'i ruajnë të gjitha
këto të dhëna rreth nesh?
04:03
Every time I use my mobile phone?
60
227709
3630
Çdo herë që përdor celularin tim?
04:07
So I asked my phone company, Deutsche Telekom,
61
231354
3756
Kështu që pyeta kompaninë time
të telefonit, Telekomin Gjerman,
04:11
which was at that time the largest phone company in Germany,
62
235110
3765
që në atë kohë ishte kompania
më e madhe telefonike në Gjermani
04:14
and I asked them, please,
63
238875
1396
dhe i pyeta, ju lutem,
04:16
send me all the information you have stored about me.
64
240271
4356
më dërgoni të gjitha të dhënat
që keni ruajtur për mua.
04:20
And I asked them once, and I asked them again,
65
244642
2159
I pyeta një herë, i pyeta sërish
04:22
and I got no real answer. It was only blah blah answers.
66
246801
3176
dhe s'mora asnjë përgjigje reale.
Ishin thjesht përgjigje koti.
04:25
But then I said, I want to have this information,
67
249977
3112
Por pastaj iu thashë,
dua t'i kem këto të dhëna,
04:28
because this is my life you are protocoling.
68
253089
4752
sepse po protokolloni jetën time.
04:33
So I decided to start a lawsuit against them,
69
257841
3992
Vendosa të nisja një padi
kundër tyre,
04:37
because I wanted to have this information.
70
261833
2960
sepse doja ta kisha këtë informacion.
04:40
But Deutsche Telekom said, no,
71
264793
2000
Por Telekomi Gjerman tha,
04:42
we will not give you this information.
72
266793
2752
"Jo, nuk ta japim këtë informacion".
04:45
So at the end, I had a settlement with them.
73
269545
4217
Në fund, arrita një marrëveshje me ta.
04:49
I'll put down the lawsuit
74
273762
1359
Do të pushoja padinë
04:51
and they will send me all the information I ask for.
75
275121
3208
dhe ata do të më dërgonin
të dhënat që iu kërkova.
04:54
Because in the mean time,
76
278329
1217
Sepse ndërkohë,
04:55
the German Constitutional Court ruled
77
279546
2237
Gjykata Kushtetuese Gjermane
vendosi
04:57
that the implementation of this E.U. directive
78
281783
3817
se zbatimi i kësaj direktive të BE-së
05:01
into German law was unconstitutional.
79
285600
4419
në ligjin gjerman ishte jokushtetues.
05:05
So I got this ugly brown envelope
80
290019
2118
Ndaj mora këtë zarf të shëmtuar
ngjyrë kafe
05:08
with a C.D. inside.
81
292137
2568
me një CD brenda.
05:10
And on the C.D., this was on.
82
294705
3080
Dhe CD-ja përmbante këto.
05:13
Thirty-five thousand eight hundred thirty lines of information.
83
297785
5361
35,830 rreshta informacion.
05:19
At first I saw it, and I said, okay,
84
303146
2415
Në fillim e pashë dhe thashë,
05:21
it's a huge file. Okay.
85
305561
3403
"Dakord, është një dosje gjigande. "
05:24
But then after a while I realized,
86
308964
2517
Por pas një farë kohe kuptova,
05:27
this is my life.
87
311481
2288
kjo është jeta ime.
05:29
This is six months of my life,
88
313769
1784
Këto janë gjashtë muaj të jetës sime
05:31
into this file.
89
315553
4298
brenda në këtë dosje.
05:35
So I was a little bit skeptical, what should I do with it?
90
319851
4250
Isha pak skeptik. Ç'të bëja me të?
05:40
Because you can see where I am,
91
324101
3179
Sepse mund të shihni ku jam,
05:43
where I sleep at night,
92
327280
2208
ku fle natën
05:45
what I am doing.
93
329488
4704
dhe çfarë po bëj.
05:50
But then I said, I want to go out with this information.
94
334192
4593
Por pastaj thashë, dua të dal
publikisht me këtë informacion.
05:54
I want to make them public.
95
338785
1776
Dua t'i bëj publike.
05:56
Because I want to show the people what does data retention mean.
96
340561
4414
Sepse dua t'iu tregoj njerëzve se çfarë
nënkupton ruajtja e të dhënave.
06:00
So together with Zeit Online and Open Data City, I did this.
97
344975
5264
Së bashku me Zeit Online
dhe Open Data City, bëra këtë.
06:06
This is a visualization of six months of my life.
98
350239
4128
Ky është një vizualizim i gjashtë muajve
të jetës sime.
06:10
You can zoom in and zoom out,
99
354367
1888
Mund ta afroni, ta largoni,
06:12
you can wind back and fast forward.
100
356255
2449
mund të ktheheni mbrapa
e të ecni para.
06:14
You can see every step I take.
101
358704
3418
Mund të shihni çdo hap që bëj.
06:18
And you can even see
102
362122
2325
Madje mund të shihni
06:20
how I go from Frankfurt by train
103
364447
3049
si shkoj me tren nga Frankfurti
06:23
to Cologne, and how often I call in between.
104
367496
4232
në Këln dhe sa shpesh telefonoj
mes këtij intervali.
06:27
All this is possible with this information.
105
371728
4733
Krejt kjo është e mundshme
me këtë informacion.
06:32
That's a little bit scary.
106
376461
5455
Është pak e frikshme.
06:37
But it is not only about me.
107
381916
5500
Por s'është vetëm për mua.
06:43
It's about all of us.
108
387416
2400
Është për të tërë ne.
06:45
First, it's only like, I call my wife and she calls me,
109
389816
4724
Fillimish, marr vetëm gruan time
dhe ajo më merr mua
06:50
and we talk to each other a couple of times.
110
394540
2671
dhe flasim disa herë
me njëri-tjetrin.
06:53
And then there are some friends calling me,
111
397211
2462
Pastaj më telefonojnë disa miq
06:55
and they call each other.
112
399673
1928
dhe ata marrin njëri-tjetrin.
06:57
And after a while you are calling you,
113
401601
2119
Dhe pastaj ju merrni ata
06:59
and you are calling you, and you have this great
114
403720
2264
dhe ata juve dhe krijohet
07:01
communication network.
115
405984
2424
një rrjet i madh komunikimi.
07:04
But you can see how your people are communicating with each other,
116
408408
4481
Por mund ta shihni si njerëzit tuaj
komunikojnë me njëri-tjetrin,
07:08
what times they call each other, when they go to bed.
117
412889
3303
në ç'kohë telefonojnë njëri-tjetrin,
kur shkojnë të flenë.
07:12
You can see all of this.
118
416192
2154
Mund t'i shihni të gjitha këto.
07:14
You can see the hubs, like who are the leaders in the group.
119
418346
4015
Mund të vështroni qendrat,
se kush janë udhëheqësit në grup.
07:18
If you have access to this information,
120
422361
3480
Nëse mund të hyni në këto të dhëna,
07:21
you can see what your society is doing.
121
425841
3847
mund të shihni se çfarë bën
shoqëria juaj.
07:25
If you have access to this information,
122
429688
2625
Nëse mund të hyni në këto të dhëna,
07:28
you can control your society.
123
432313
4417
mund ta kontrolloni shoqërinë tuaj.
07:32
This is a blueprint for countries like China and Iran.
124
436730
4976
Ky është një model
për vendet si Kina dhe Irani.
07:37
This is a blueprint how to survey your society,
125
441706
4168
Ky është një model si të mbikëqyret
shoqëria,
07:41
because you know who talks to whom,
126
445874
2616
sepse dini se kush flet
me njërin, apo tjetrin,
07:44
who sends whom an email, all this is possible
127
448490
2881
kush i dërgon mesazh elektronik kujt,
krejt kjo është e mundshme,
07:47
if you have access to this information.
128
451371
2698
nëse mund të hyni në këto të dhëna.
07:49
And this information is stored for at least six months
129
454069
3037
Në Europë këto informacione ruhen të paktën
07:53
in Europe, up to two years.
130
457106
4987
për gjashtë muaj, e gjer në dy vite.
07:57
Like I said at the beginning,
131
462093
1615
Siç thashë në fillim,
07:59
imagine that all those people on the streets of Berlin
132
463708
3433
përfytyroni sikur të gjithë ata njerëz

And the Stasi would have known who took part at this protest,

Dhe Stasi do të kish ditur se
kush mori pjesë në atë protestë,
08:12
and if the Stasi would have known
136

dhe po ta kish ditur Stasi
08:14
who are the leaders behind it,
137
478268

se cilët janë drejtuesit pas saj,
08:17
this may never have happened.

ajo mund të mos kish ndodhur kurrë.
08:20
The fall of the Berlin Wall would maybe not [have been] there.
139

Rënia e Murit të Berlinit
mund të mos ishte kryer.
08:23
And in the aftermath, also not the fall of the Iron Curtain.
140

Dhe si pasojë, as rënia
e Perdes së Hekurt.
08:27
Because today, state agencies and companies
141
491630
4608
Sot, agjencitë dhe kompanitë shtetërore
08:32
want to store as much information as they can get about us,
142
496238
4289
duan të ruajnë sa më tepër të dhëna
rreth nesh që të munden,
08:36
online and offline.
143

08:38
They want to have the possibility to track our lives,
144
502407

Duan të kenë mundësinë
të gjurmojnë jetët tona
08:42
and they want to store them for all time.
145
506614

dhe duan t'i ruajnë tërë kohës.
08:46
But self-determination and living in the digital age
146
510462
4443
Por mes vetëpërcaktimit dhe ekzistencës
në epokën digjitale
08:50
is no contradiction.
147
514905
2697
nuk ka kontradiktë.
08:53
But you have to fight for your self-determination today.
148
517602
5159
Por sot duhet të luftosh
për vetëpërcaktim.
08:58
You have to fight for it every day.
149
522761

Për të duhet luftuar përditë.
09:02
So, when you go home,
150

Kur të shkoni në shtëpi,
09:05
tell your friends
151
529550
1656
u thoni miqve tuaj
09:07
that privacy is a value of the 21st century,
152
531206
4311
se privatësia është një vlerë
e shek. 21-të
09:11
and it's not outdated.
153

dhe nuk është vjetruar.
09:13
When you go home, tell your representative
154
538037
4066
Kur të shkoni në shtëpi,
u thoni përfaqësuesve tuaj
09:18
only because companies and state agencies have the possibility
155
542103
4479
se thjesht pse kompanitë dhe agjencitë
shtetërore kanë mundësinë
09:22
to store certain information, they don't have to do it.
156
546582
5416
të ruajnë një informacion të caktuar,
s'kanë pse ta bëjnë.
09:27
And if you don't believe me,
157
551998

Nëse s'më besoni,
09:30
ask your phone company what information they store about you.
158
554343

pyesni kompaninë tuaj telefonike
se çfarë informacioni kanë ruajtur për ju.
09:37
So, in the future, every time you use your mobile phone,
159
561966

Në të ardhmen, sa herë
që të përdorni celularin,
09:44
let it be a reminder to you
160

të sillni në mend
09:47
that you have to fight for self-determination in the digital age.

se duhet të luftoni për vetëpërcaktim
