In fact, Mars is considered
to be too dry for life as we know it.

Na verdade, Marte é considerado
seco demais para a vida que conhecemos.

Eu sou astrobiólogo.
00:32
I try to understand

00:39
People sometimes ask me,
10
27400
1256
Às vezes me perguntam:
00:40
how can you be an astrobiologist
11
28680
2176
"Como você é um astrobiólogo,
00:42
if you don't have your own spaceship?
12
30880
1800
se não tem sua própria nave espacial?"
00:45
Well, what I do is that I study life
13
33640
2216
Bem, o que eu faço é estudar a vida
em ambientes da Terra
00:47
in those environments on Earth
14
35880
1976
00:49
that most closely resemble
other interesting places in the universe.
15
37880

00:54
All life on Earth requires water,
16
42120
2456
Toda vida na Terra precisa de água;
00:56
so in my case I focus
on the intimate relationship
17
44600
2536
no meu caso, trabalho com foco
na relação íntima entre a água e a vida,

19

01:02
if we could find life

01:06
But since I do not have

3536
Mas, como eu não tenho US$ 2,5 bilhões
01:10
to send my own robot to Mars,
22
58000
2216
para enviar meu próprio robô para Marte,
01:12
I study the most Martian place on Earth,
23
60240
2936
eu estudo o local mais marciano da Terra,
01:15
the Atacama Desert.
24
63200
1536
o deserto do Atacama.
01:16
Located in northern Chile,
25
64760
1656
Localizado no norte do Chile,
01:18
it is the oldest
and driest desert on Earth.
26
66440
3616
é o deserto mais antigo e seco da Terra.
01:22
To give you an idea of how dry it is,
27
70080
1976
Para ter uma ideia do quão seco ele é,
01:24
consider here in Vancouver it rains
over 1,000 millimeters of rain every year.
28
72080
5040
considere que aqui em Vancouver cai
mais de mil milímetros de chuva por ano.
01:29
In the Atacama, there are places
with no reported rains
29
77880
3616
No Atacama, há lugares em que não há
registro de chuvas há 400 anos.
01:33
in the last 400 years.
30
81520
1800
01:36
How do I know this?
31
84880
1696
Como eu sei disso?
01:38
Well, because I was born
and raised in the Atacama --
32
86600
3496
Bem, porque nasci e fui criado no Atacama.
01:42
(Laughter)
33
90120
1616
(Risos)
01:43
So I had a unique advantage
34
91760
2016
Então eu tinha uma boa vantagem,
01:45
when I started studying this desert.
35
93800
2040
quando comecei a estudá-lo.
01:48
So let me tell you guys
a few fantastic examples
36
96880
3536
Então deixem-me contar
alguns exemplos fantásticos
01:52
he has found
37
100440
1656
que descobri
01:54
on how life has adapted
to live with almost no water at all.
38
102120
3200
de como a vida se adaptou
para viver quase sem água nenhuma.
01:58
One of my first findings
was in the entrance of a cave
39
106640
2576
Uma das minhas primeiras descobertas
foi a entrada de uma caverna
virada para o Oceano Pacífico.
02:01
facing the Pacific Ocean.
40
109240
1736
02:03
In this place, we reported
a new type of microalgae
41
111000
3696
Nesse local, encontramos
um novo tipo de microalga
02:06
that grew only on top of the spiderwebs
that covered the cave entrance.
42
114720
3920
que crescia somente
em cima das teias de aranha
que cobriam a entrada da caverna.
02:11
Have you ever seen a spiderweb
early in the morning?
43
119240
2520
Você já viu uma teia
de aranha de manhã cedo?
02:15
It's covered with dew,
44
123200
1576
Ela fica coberta de orvalho,
02:16
so this microalgae learned
that in order to carry photosynthesis
45
124800
3256
então a microalga aprendeu
que, para fazer fotossíntese
02:20
in the coast of the driest
desert on Earth,
46
128080
3016
na costa do deserto mais seco da Terra,
02:23
they could use the spiderwebs.
47
131120
1496
podia usar teias de aranha.
02:24
So here they may access
the water from the fogs
48
132640
2416
Porque aqui elas tinham
acesso à água da névoa
02:27
that regularly cover
these areas in the morning.
49
135080
2240
que normalmente cobre
essas áreas pela manhã.
02:30
In another cave, we found
a different type of microalgae.
50
138640
2840
Em outra caverna, descobrimos
um tipo diferente de microalga.
02:34
This one is able to use ocean mist
as a source of water,
51
142120
4216
Essa é capaz de usar a névoa
do oceano como fonte de água,
02:38
and strikingly lives
in the very bottom of a cave,
52
146360
3136
e, surpreendentemente,
vive no fundo de uma caverna,
02:41
so it has adapted to live
with less than 0.1 percent
53
149520
3216
então se adaptou para viver
com menos de 0,1%
02:44
of the amount of light
that regular plants need.
54
152760
3120
da quantidade de luz
que uma planta precisa normalmente.
02:49
These type of findings
suggest to me that on Mars,
55
157000
3016
Esse tipo de descoberta
sugere que, em Marte,
é possível até encontrar vida
fotossintética dentro de cavernas.
02:52
we may find even
photosynthetic life inside caves.
56
160040
2856
02:54
And by the way, that's me.
57
162920
1376
A propósito, este sou eu.
02:56
(Laughter)
58
164320
2816
(Risos)
02:59
Now, for almost 15 years
this region of Yungay, discovered by NASA,
59
167160
5736
Por quase 15 anos essa região
de Yungay, descoberta pela NASA,
03:04
was thought to be
the driest place of this desert,
60
172920
3016
foi considerada o lugar
mais seco desse deserto,
03:07
but I knew that it was not.
61
175960
1736
mas eu sabia que não era.
03:09
How? You already know the answer.
62
177720
2376
Como? Vocês já sabem a resposta.
03:12
Because I was born
and raised in this desert.
63
180120
2216
Porque nasci e fui criado nesse deserto.
03:14
So I remembered that I
usually see fogs in Yungay,
64
182360
4656
Eu me lembrava de normalmente
ver névoa em Yungay,
03:19
so after setting sensors
in a number of places,
65
187040
2216
então coloquei sensores em vários lugares,
03:21
where I remember
never seeing fogs or clouds,
66
189280
3056
onde eu me lembrava de nunca
ter visto névoa ou nuvens,
03:24
I reported four other sites
much drier than Yungay,
67
192360
4016
e descobri quatro outros locais
mais secos do que Yungay,
03:28
with this one, María Elena South,
68
196400
2616
sendo este o sul de María Elena,
03:31
being the truly driest place on Earth,
69
199040
3456
o local verdadeiramente
mais seco da Terra,
03:34
as dry as Mars,
70
202520
1976
tão seco quanto Marte,
03:36
and amazingly, just a 15-minute ride
71
204520
2336
e, incrivelmente, a apenas
15 minutos de distância
03:38
from the small mining town
where I was born.
72
206880
2280
da pequena cidade mineradora
onde eu nasci.
03:42
Now, in this search, we were trying
to actually find the dry limit
73
210000
3416
Nessa pesquisa, nós tentamos
descobrir o limite da secura
03:45
for life on Earth,
74
213440
1216
para a vida na Terra,
03:46
a place so dry that nothing
was able to survive in it.
75
214680
3856
um lugar tão seco que nada
conseguisse sobreviver nele.
03:50
But even here, well hidden underground,
76
218560
2576
Mas até aqui, bem escondido
no subterrâneo,
03:53
we found a number
of different microorganisms,
77
221160
2416
encontramos vários
micro-organismos diferentes,
03:55
which suggested to me
that similarly dry places, like Mars,
78
223600
3456
o que me mostrou que locais
igualmente secos, como Marte,
03:59
may be in inhabited.
79
227080
1200
podem ser habitados.
04:01
We even have some preliminary evidences
80
229360
2296
Nós temos até algumas
evidências preliminares
04:03
that these microorganisms
may still be active
81
231680
2536
de que esses micro-organismos
ainda podem estar ativos
04:06
in the desiccated state,
82
234240
1936
em estado dessecado,
04:08
like walking mummies all around us,
83
236200
3816
como múmias ambulantes
ao nosso redor,
04:12
and that they may be using
UV radiation as a source of energy.
84
240040
4120
e que eles podem estar usando
a radiação UV como fonte de energia.
04:16
If confirmed, this would have
a huge impact on our definition of life,
85
244880
4576
Se confirmado, isso teria um impacto
enorme na nossa definição de vida,
04:21
on how we look for life
elsewhere in the universe.
86
249480
2520
em como procuramos vida
em outros lugares do universo.
04:24
Due to its clear skies, by 2020,
87
252760
3016
Devido ao seu céu límpido, em 2020,

88

89

2216
estarão no Atacama,
04:32

will be looking among the stars
90
