Filmed:

01:45
Now you may可能 ask, why have I doneDONE these things?
01:48
They're not really typical典型 for a musician's音樂家
01:50
day-to-day日復一日 life.
01:52
Well, I did it because I fell下跌 in love with the music音樂
01:56
and I wanted to share分享 it with as many許多 people
01:59
as possible可能.
02:01
It started開始 a couple一對 of years年份 ago.
02:03
I was sitting坐在 at home on the couch長椅 with the flu流感
02:07
and browsing瀏覽 the Internet互聯網 a little,
02:09
when I found發現 out that Handel亨德爾 had written書面 works作品
02:12
for the keyboard鍵盤.
02:14
Well, I was surprised詫異. I did not know this.
02:16
So I downloaded下載 the sheet music音樂 and started開始 playing播放.
02:21
And what happened發生 next下一個 was
02:22
that I entered進入 this state of pure,
02:29
It was an experience
02:31
of being存在 totally完全 in awe威嚴 of the music音樂,
02:34
and I had not felt that in a long time.
02:38
It might威力 be easier更輕鬆 to relate涉及 to this when you hear it.
02:42
The first piece that I played發揮 through通過
02:46
started開始 like this.
02:49
(Music
03:14
Well this sounds聲音 very melancholic憂鬱, doesn't it?
03:18
And I turned轉身 the page and what came來了 next下一個
03:21
was this.
03:23
(Music
03:50
Well, this sounds聲音 very energetic有活力, doesn't it?
03:54
So within a couple一對 of minutes分鐘,
03:57
and the piece isn't even finished yet然而,
03:59
I experienced有經驗的 two very contrasting對比 characters人物:
04:07
And I consider考慮 these two elements分子 to be
04:12
And the purity純度 of the music音樂 makes品牌 you hear it
04:14
very effectively有效.
04:19
I've given特定 a lot of children's兒童 concerts音樂會
04:22
for children孩子 of seven and eight years年份 old,
04:25
and whatever隨你 I play, whether是否 it's Bach過獨身生活, Beethoven貝多芬,
04:29
even Stockhausen豪森,
04:30
or some jazzy爵士 music音樂,
04:33
they are open打開 to hear it,
04:35
really willing願意 to listen,
04:37
and they are comfortable自在 doing so.
04:40
And when classes come in
04:42
with children孩子 who are just a few少數 years年份 older舊的,
04:45
11, 12, I felt that I sometimes有時 already已經 had trouble麻煩
04:50
in reaching到達 them like that.
04:52
The complexity複雜 of the music音樂 does become成為 an issue問題,
04:56
and actually其實 the opinions意見 of others其他
05:00
parents父母, friends朋友, media媒體 — they start開始 to count計數.
05:04
But the young年輕 ones那些, they don't question
05:07
their own擁有 opinion意見.
05:10
They are in this constant不變 state of wonder奇蹟,
05:13
and I do firmly牢牢 believe that we can keep listening
05:17
like these seven-year-old七十歲 children孩子,
05:19
even when growing生長 up.
05:22
And that is why I have played
05:24
not only in the concert音樂會 hall大廳
05:26
but also on the street, online線上, in the air空氣:
05:30
to feel that state of wonder奇蹟,
05:33
to truly listen,
05:35
and to listen without prejudice偏見.
05:39
And I would like to invite邀請 you

About the speaker:

Daria van den Bercken - Pianist
Daria van den Bercken has played piano with major Dutch orchestras, and performed many a recital in her country’s famed concert halls. But her larger vision is to bring classical music to the masses.

Why you should listen

Pianist Daria van den Bercken makes classical music lovers — and those who had no idea that they appreciated this kind of music — listen to classic composers with fresh ears. She has played with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a regular guest at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. But it’s bringing classic music to unexpected audiences where her passion engages.

While sick with the flu several years ago, Daria discovered the keyboard compositions of George Frideric Handel. She wanted to bring these beautiful works to the masses. With her project ‘Handel at the Piano,’ she played these pieces in unexpected places — even flying with her piano 25-feet over the audience at the Virada Cultural Festival in São Paulo, Brazil. Through a series of concerts, and an album, she asked audiences to rethink Handel.

Daria’s latest project is 'Keys to Mozart,' an effort to breathe new life into Mozart’s piano works. She is preparing to record an album for Sony Classical and will play a series of concerts too.
